When We're Broken Completely Down - James 4:1-10

This week, James (click here to read Jas 4:1-10) encourages us to go somewhere with him. In chapter four, verses seven through ten, James tells his audience to submit to God. he tells us that if we will simply draw near to God, He will draw near to us - then he gives us instructions on how to do it. Check out what James tells us next: "Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your ...

A Different Kind Of Wisdom Altogether - James 3:11-18

Toward the end of James 3 (Jas 3:11-18) "Who is wise and understanding among you?" If that question was posed to your congregation today, who would come to your mind? James had a specific type of people that he was referring to when he used the words "wise and understanding." James, being a Torah observant Jew would only equate the idea of true wisdom with Torah understanding and observance. James was in essence asking, "Who among you knows Torah, and i ...

Sometimes We Need A Spark Arrestor For Our Mouths - James 3:1-10

Welcome back to The Word Is Grace.  We have gone through a lot this last two weeks. My main hard drive took a dive, and we had a death in the family, so I have been late in posting. This week, we pick up where we left off, starting in James chapter three.  James makes it clear that we should not rush to become teachers, because there is a more strict judgment for them. In James' day, there were many people who were trying to gain social prominence by becoming leaders in the Messia ...

Faith Is A Verb - James 2:14-26

Welcome back! Thanks for joining us at The Word Is Grace. This week, we are back in the book of James, chapter 2:14-26.Most of us are aware of the supposed conflict between the book of James and the writings of Paul, namely Galatians. Paul tells us in Gal 2:16 that we are justified by faith in Messiah and not the works of the Law. James asks in James 2:21, "was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?"What do we do with this? It seems t ...

L'Shanah Tovah!

We will not be posting a podcast for this week, as we are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year. This Festival goes by a few different names, including "Yom ha-Zikaron (the "Day of Remembrance), Yom HaMachiac (Day of the King) and Coronation Day.This holiday is special, because it starts a ten day period of repentance and self examination for the believer. It is a time for making things right with the LORD - be it your relationship with Him, or your relationship with o ...

James Tells Us To Obey The Torah - James 2:1-13

This week, as we go through James 2:1-13 we learn that not only is James telling his readers to obey Torah, but he calls it the "Law of Liberty," or Freedom. Haven't we been taught in the past though that the Law was bondage? Didn't Paul say that we were "no longer under the Law?" How can James equate the Law with freedom?  The answer is simple; because that is exactly what it is - instructions for true freedom. First Century Jewish thought was that obedience to the ...

They're Gonna Hate You - James 1:17-27

When we first become believers in Yeshua, it is easy to be think that the whole world wants to hear the message that saved us. Most of us are a little taken back when we are not received with joyful words of encouragement, and completely startled when our audience rejects our message.  Today, we see the church as a whole taking steps to "remedy" this issue. The "remedy" for the negative response to the message of the Gospel, unfortunately, has been to water d ...

Abba, Father - Ch 4:1-10

Paul tells us in Galatians 4:6 that God has "sent forth the Spirit in your hearts, crying Abba Father." We are to have an intimate relationship with our Father in heaven, even to the point of calling Him Abba. If you are unfamiliar with this word, it is the word that small Hebrew speaking children call their fathers - similar to an American child calling his or her father "daddy".  We see Yeshua in the garden of Gethsemane crying out, "Abba Father, take t ...

It is Easier to 'Shoot the Messenger' Gal 4:11-32

Have you ever been confronted with something that hurt you, made you angry, and rattled you to your core... because it was true? So have I. Most of us have. Paul suffered a lot for sharing the Truth with the Gentiles. In Galatians 4:16 he asks, "Have I become your enemy because I tell you the truth?" Paul's heart was that no one would walk this walk in vein. He loved the people that he wrote to far too much to give them anything less than the truth - and sometimes it hurt. T ...

Nip It In The Bud! Ch 5:1-15

In this week's teaching, chapter 5:1-15, Paul sees that there is danger brewing in the walk of the Galatians. Someone that Paul never calls by name, is trying to lead them in to another gospel;  that of becoming a proselyte. They were being told that they must become Jews in order to receive salvation. The NIV says that they have been "cut in on". The gospel that they were being presented was not from God, and like we said last week, Paul loves them enough to warn them ...

You're In, Now Act Like It. - Gal 5:16-24

How is your walk? Better yet, what defines your walk? Paul tells the Galatians to "walk in the Spirit..." which unfortunately has been used as a call to disregard Torah. The common teaching goes something like this, "walk in the Spirit - not the works of the Law!"   So what was Paul talking about when he said to walk in the Spirit? We do not believe that Paul was telling the Galatians to walk in the Spirit instead of anything. Think about it; Paul uses the T ...

Our Choices Have Consequences Gal 5:25-6:18

This week Tim as finishes up the book of Galatians we are reminded by Paul (Gal 6:8) that "...he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life." Paul is encouraging the Galatians to make wise decisions; after all we will all reap what we have sown. It is easy to see Paul's heart as he finishes this letter - he is urging them [and us!] to "stay the course." Paul wants everybody in his ...

Putting Feet To Your Faith - Intro to James

Thanks for listening to The Word Is Grace! This week we begin the book of James, taught by Aaron Benge. Through the years, James has been seen as a contradiction of sorts to the writings of Paul; namely the book of Galatians. James tells us that we are "justified by works" while Paul writes that, "by the deeds of the Law no man shall be justified." We believe that the entire collection of canonized scripture (the bible as we know it) is the inspired Word of God, w ...

Count It All Joy? James 1:1-16

James barely gets two verses into his epistle before he says something that sounds a little hard to swallow. James says that we are to, "...count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience." How are we to count our trials as joy? The next verse tells us; "let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" That is the goal - that is how we are to count them as ...
