GBTV #532 (small) | iPhone 3.0 Features, Adamo, Woopra, Android Live Folders

Apple's announcement was Tuesday. iPhone 3.0 won't come out until this summer, but it'll bring some much desired features, including cut and paste! Last week, I tweeted about the Dell Adamo, and now it's been launched. At first, we thought it would a MacBook Pro competitor, but it's actually more comparable to the Air. It'll sell for $2000. If you were in the Geek Brief family last year, you saw my breaking story about Woopra, a live web analytics program. I've never experienced an a ...

GBTV #527 (small) | Have you seen apps open this fast?

We've all had the desire to have the fastest computer in the world, but this guy did something about it! He put 24 Samsung Solid State Hard Drives in a PC and in this promotional video demonstrates just how fast it is in today's video. It doesn't matter how fast your computer is, you know what you ultimately want is instant response. You click an icon and the app is instantly up and running for you. This is the closest thing I've ever seen to that. You can save money on domain name regi ...

Vote for Cali Stephen Wolfram has been working on WolframAlpha for years and is attempting to change the world of search. GBTV #523 (small) | Apple Product Refreshes, Best Job in the World Contest

Today is a big product refresh from Apple. They've updated iMacs, the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro. Very little has changed on the outside of any of the machines. It's all about faster, better more effecient performance. The Mac Pro internal system architecture has been re-designed to make upgrades even easier. Out of everything that's changed, I'm most excited about the new Airport Extreme. It now simultaneously and separately supports 2.4GHz data Wi-Fi AND 5GHz Wi-Fi. That means your need ...

The latest Apple TV update (2.3.1) breaks Boxee again. Sales of the Apple TV surged in the last quarter of 2008, and my guess is that Boxee was a factor. Boxee is a killer app for Apple TV and I would love to see Apple open up the platform. If you already have Boxee installed, you can update Apple TV and just use the patchstick to re-install. There is a reason Kindle 1 is a success. It did what it was supposed to do without frustrating users. Kindle software and services are so good that the industrial design flaws in version 1 were easy to overlook ... at least for early adopters. Kindle 2 is ready for everyone. It combines great software, great service and a very nice little piece of hardware. Kindle 2 feels better to hold. Hulu is being taken off Boxee's available content. No one is happy about the decision, but Jason Kilar's approach to the situation is commendable. I get the impression that he realizes having to do this is as boneheaded as we all think it is. A year ago, I hosted a panel on 4G. Back then, no one was really talking about it except for a select few, but now we're beginning to see some action. It hardly feels like news, but Toshiba decided they'll be out of the HD DVD business by the end of March. Apple reduced the price of the iPod Shuffle to $49 and introduced a 2GB version for $69. Verizon and AT&T both announced unlimited voice plans for $99 before we shot this Brief and then T-Mobile followed suit while we were shooting. XamBox may be the single best intermediary device between analog and digital I've ever seen. Paper documents, receipts and business cards are scanned in and dropped in a box. Software converts the paper to PDFs and catalogs in what order the hard copies are stored in the box. When the box is full, you label it, seal it and store it. If you need the document again, the software will tell you exactly where to look, or you can just print a fresh copy. Ziszor! (with an exclamation point like ...

Making my way through the Apple TV Take 2 update I found much to like. It's a gift to podcasters and our viewers and listeners. The movie rental experience is nearly perfect. Access to Flickr photos via Apple TV is nothing but fun. The improvements are really, really nice, but with this update Apple accomplished something they'll probably never promote. The Kindle was announced at an event this morning and as it was announced the Amazon.com homepage displayed an open letter from Jeff Bezos. It's available now, you can order it from this link . I went ahead and early adopted for you. My Kindle will arrive tomorrow, and of course, I'll do a review. ...

Evolve Wireless Speakers are in the house and this is an unboxing and a review. I've been wanting? No! I've been begging for a speaker system like this for almost three years because it fits the way Neal and I want to consume audio content...specifically podcasts like Daily Source Code, This Week in Tech and The Dawn and Drew Show. Those are three shows we like to listen to at the same time while we're doing other things in different parts of the house. Evolve not only makes that poss ...

Gibson Guitars has made tuning a breeze with their Robot Guitar. I've finally found a peer to peer file sharing service that I believe will stay in business. It's called PipeBytes, and while you wait for your file to download, they make sure you have a YouTube video to entertain you. There's a new smart pen called Livescribe Smartpen that not only records what you write with it, it also records audio while you write. The firmware update for the Nokia N810 also works for the N800, and ...

In Brief #257, we turned on the GBTVpc after months of delay. In today's show, we install LinuxMCE, which has MythTV and runs on Kubuntu. I'm impressed with the amount of features and options LinuxMCE has, and I'm looking forward to exploring it. After we complete the install and run the setup wizards, we run into a little problem. Time to do some research and learn more about Linux!

We had an amazing night Sunday night on Ustream. Geoff Smith twittered that he was on and working in his studio. I'm not much of a beer drinker, but if I was, I'd probably be all over the Avanti Mini Pub Keg Dispenser. At $239, the kegerator is a bargain compared to my $2000 J5 coffee maker. I love gadget news, but gadget reviews...not so much. With the news, I get to talk about what's exciting to me in the world of tech and consumer electronics. With reviews, I get a product shipped to the G.I.A. HQ where we unbox it with the sad knowledge that we'll be re-boxing it and sending it back. I tend to only review stuff I like enough to buy, but on this Brief I make some exceptions and review the Palm Centro, the Sonos Digital Music System and the Jura Capresso Impressa J5 coff ...

At GBTV, we like experimenting and living on the cutting edge of what technology is ready to allow.  Over the past few weeks, I've interviewed about 20 people inPodcasting on Skype.  We believe a video interview on Skype will soon look as good as a Satellite up-link on a network. On this episode, I talk to Paul Colligan from PremiumCast.com about what they're doing to exploit the potential of RSS. This is one of the best interviews in the experiment.  We'll release the rest of the inte ...

We recorded this brief little review of Leopard Sunday and I pointed out the two features we think of as life-changers, at least as far as work-flows go. The first is cover-flow. Being able to browse through every kind of document using cover-flow makes organizing files on a Mac easier than ever. Unless you're made of hard drives, you have to delete files. I typically put that off until I'm hurting for space. It's fast and fun to browse through a folder using cover flow and I used the ...

We shot this Brief as I was driving through north Washington state. It was too rainy to get out and shoot a regular Brief, so I decided to review the Navicore Navkit GPS system. It works with the N800 and certain Nokia phones. Overall, I love it and it's a great device, but there are three things about it that drive me crazy every time we take a trip. That's what this Brief is about.

Finally! After a loooong wait, we're moving on with the GBTV PC Project! I apologize for the delay. After the move, cables were in different spots and getting everything back together took longer than we expected, and definitely longer than we wanted. On this episode, we connect everything and turn it on, and find out that so far all we have is a $2,000 LED light. We'll be working on it, and if you have any suggestions, please leave a comment or head on over to the GBTVpc Forum.

We decided to go ahead and activate the two iPhones we bought. It was sad to break up with TMobile. They've been great to us, and I haven't had a good experience with AT&T Mobile so far (I love AT&T DSL). I had to wait a bit for my activation to go through, and when it did, both Neal and I held our iPhones until the battery died. Then I stared at them while they charged. On this episode, I install the RAM and the PCI cards. Installation of these components is super simple. If you're doing it for the first time, you may feel like you're pressing too hard, but with even, careful pressure, you'll do just fine. I've been coughing non-stop for a week. On this episode, I install the CPU and the motherboard. The installation was a pretty smooth, although, nerve-wracking experience. AMD recommends using thermal compound, but getting the amount just right had me shaking. I had a really difficult time attaching the CPU Cooler. It felt like the amount of pressure I had to apply would just be too much, but then again, maybe, I'm not working out the right muscles playing Super Swing Golf on the Wii. We wanted to spend some time with AppleTV before reviewing it. We've had it fora little over a week and we've put it through some paces. This episode is an overview of the setup, user interface, and my review. The cables I talk about are from XtremeMac. They're great cables that sell for $20 or less. GBTV | Introducing Natali Del Conte and TeXtra

Last time I went to San Francisco, I met Natali Del Conti. Shedoes a tech news show called Textra. I asked her to come on GeekBrief.TV, so here she is. We talk about what the show is all about, her background as a tech writer, Adam Curry, the municipal wireless movement, and our addictions to knowing what's going on in the tech world 24/7. I did the editing in Final Cut Pro all by myself. Woohoo! :) Neal re-arranged the set. Again.

GBTV Communiqué | Our studio camera is being repaired

Wednesday night when we were shooting the next GBTVpc episode, the DV connection got stretched. The camera stopped communicating with the computer. Then I had to leave for my sister's bridal shower in Atlanta. We shot this on the way home from the airport using the Sanyo Xacti. In the meantime, we'll be renting a camera so we can continue to do the show. There's so much to talk about!!!
