Leaving your dog or cat outside for extended periods of time is not okay. Modern dogs were bred to be family members not a cheap alarm system. The life expectancy for outdoor cats is four to five years vs. over 15 years for indoor cats.
Having a pet sitter come to your house, and preferably stay overnight, when you're away will allow you and your pets to be much more relaxed and stress free.
