President's Day 2008 was a spectacularly beautiful day of sun and blue skies, considering the usually grey weather of February. I also unexpectedly had the day off from work. One of the key stops on our regular pilgrimages to the Big Island is a drive out to Kapa'au, ancestral home of my mother's side of the family, to visit the graves of my maternal grandparents at the Kohala Jodo Mission. It was a major television milestone, broadcast live, globally, to over a billion people in over 30 countries. The statue was donated by TV Land.

At 2 p.m., the store was closed up, the windows were blacked out, and the wait began. Those in line got to know each other, got interviewed by the media, and were given some refreshments. Eventually, claps and cheers erupted as hundreds of eager buyers parted with hundreds of dollars to own Apple's first mobile phone.
