The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has a team of scientists testing micro and nanotechnology to use on spacecraft. The goal is to reduce the reflection off the surface of the instruments so that the data does not get polluted by the scattered light. The carbon nanotubes that the team grows have proven to be 10 times better than the NASA Z306 paint, currently used on spacecraft instruments.

Teen Sailor Abby Sunderland Meets NASA Team That Saved Her Life

In June 2010, at age 16, Abby Sunderland attempted to be the youngest person to sail the world solo. When she found herself stranded and lost at sea, Abby’s life was saved by NASA-developed satellite-based search and rescue technologies that allowed rescuers to detect her distress signal and pinpoint her location thousands of miles off the Australian coast. On October 25, 2010, Abby visited NASA GSFC to meet the team that developed the technology, which ultimately saved her life.

NASA Mission Update: SPITZER

NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope is starting a second career and taking its first shots of the cosmos since warming up. The infrared telescope ran out of coolant May 15, 2009, more than five-and-one-half-years after launch. It has since warmed to a still-frosty 30 degrees Kelvin (about minus 406 degrees Fahrenheit).

NASA Mission Update: PHOENIX

Discoveries made by the Mars Odyssey Orbiter in 2002 show large amounts of subsurface water ice in the northern arctic plain. The Phoenix lander targets this circumpolar region using a robotic arm to dig through the protective top soil layer to the water ice below and ultimately, to bring both soil and water ice to the lander platform for sophisticated scientific analysis.
