M.U.S.I.K. is a month-long endeavor to write a new piece of music each day. The challenge of coming up with an idea and then recording it every 24 hours pushes me to be creative on a deadline. With no rules on instrumentation or length, the results vary wildly, so the best approximation I can give is that each day will bring a subset of time devoted to patterned noise.Primary Format :

MUSIK - Aug 31 - "Revolver Unloaded" Finally settling on idea number seven or so, I pulled this minimal sketch out of the woodwork and got it down nice and slow. We end MUSIK 2006 with a lone electric guitar (and minimal accompaniment), much like last time. It always comes down to the guitar.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 26 - "316 (Van Halen Cover)"Written for his son, this Van Halen acoustic guitar instrumental interlude has always been a favorite of mine.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 30 - "Day Dreams (Live)"Day Dreams, another MIDI song from my yesteryear, is a companion piece to Night Dreams. In it, the nightmare that tormented you in the terrible evening has been vanquished. In other words, this piece has lighter guitar motifs and less fast-paced rock riffs.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 28 - "Gravy Milkshake Mistake"A cool name for an otherwise unspectacular little electronica dirge.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 29 - "Night Dreams (Live)"Night Dreams is a piece I wrote a looooong time ago (notice the extra o's). Until now, it has only existed as a MIDI file. But I finally recorded it live and I couldn't be (much) happier. It's more jazzy than rock, and has a requisite smooth bass line, but it also gets going in the middle-to-end part, so I classify it as rock.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 25 - "Pointless Rock Jam 916"An instrumental rock tune featuring badly-recorded rhythm guitar with badly-recorded lead guitar over it.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 24 - "Real Men of Genius - Mr. Real Men of Genius 80s Hair Metal Singer"A parody of those funtactular "Real Men of Genius" ads Budweiser puts out occasionally. Self-reference beats all topics.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 23 - "Losing Steam"A quick acoustic and vocal song about my computer troubles and subsequent fixes. It'll be a folk classic soon enough.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 22 - "On the Edge of the World"If you were standing on the theoretical edge of the world, this music just might start playing.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 21 - "The Up and Down Song"A short synthesized ride up and down the frequency slopes.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 27 - "Exercise in Calamity"A peek into my mindspace at Day 27 of this 31-day project. Basically, a piano piece that features accidental beauty mixed with chaos.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 19 - "Kraid's Lair (Metroid Cover)"An acoustic guitar cover of the Kraid's Lair theme from the original Metroid for the NES.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 20 - "Sewer Symphony (Chrono Trigger Cover)"Rounding out the weekend with more old-school video game music done on the acoustic guitar, I present to you the "Sewer" theme from Chrono Trigger for the SNES.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 18 - "The Corpus Musicus (V-Pectus)"The Corpus Musicus is a pretentious idea of mine to write a really long, multi-part epic of sorts. Part V - Pectus (Heart, Soul): The big rock opera finish with the frantic piano, strings and flute (of course).Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 17 - "The Corpus Musicus (IV-Ramicis)"The Corpus Musicus is a pretentious idea of mine to write a really long, multi-part epic of sorts. Part III - Os (Mouth): A downtempo little beat with some light jazz accoutrements, like the congas and piano chord attacks. My voice is modulated to make it sound cooler, I swear!Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 15 - "The Corpus Musicus (II-Aurisis)"The Corpus Musicus is a pretentious idea of mine to write a really long, multi-part epic of sorts. Part II - Aurisis (Ears): I really like chamber music. Orchestral music that's complicated and uses lots of different timbres is hard to pull off, tho. So, instead, I give you this...my rendition of a waltz.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 14 - "The Corpus Musicus (I-Appendices)"The Corpus Musicus is a pretentious idea of mine to write a really long, multi-part epic of sorts. Part I - Appendices (Appendages): Things start off with a short drum solo.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 13 - "Burn (Altered Perception Cover)"Jimmy Cuadra is Altered Perception. His 2001 masterpiece, "A Lock on the Door," has quite the incensed track at the number three spot, and this is my attempt at covering it in a slightly more rocking way than the original.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 11 - "Echoes of a Former Sleep"Vocal practice. Writing words has always been difficult for me, and then the idea of singing them...well! This is to see if I can even hit certain notes consistently enough. That, and it's a good moody piece for emoing.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 12 - "Plenty of Stuffing to Go Around"Six minutes of light guitar motifs over a lighter rhythm guitar riff. It's really just an excuse for me to aimlessly solo for a while. I do that on occasion, you know.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 10 - "Cumulonimbus"Ambient tuned noise plus a bit of Radiohead-ish electronica makes a raga moderne in today's audio quagmire.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 09 - "Ventura Belmont Bazaar"A little gypsy, a little SoCal rock, a lot of things I make up on the spot to get a cool, little groove piece to jive along to.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 08 - "Just Give It A Rest"It is a foundation of MUSIK that I hold dear and present to you once again in honored tradition: badly-recorded, amateurishly-played guitar rock.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 07 - "Quest For Blue"You'll find a groove piece with some tasty melodies interwoven overtop a fairly normal 4/4 beat. Not sure if melodies can be tasted, but if they can you will want to eat the ones that lie herewithin.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 06 - "Boring Town"Well. I think I was pretty successful at turning a 30-second snippet of some background music into this stomping, tribal brouhaha you will soon be listening to.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 03 - "Broque"Something hearkening back to the 17th century, as it uses primarily traditional orchestral instruments, like the violin, and double bass. I also chose to add a viola and piccolo to mix things up a bit. There's some definite tension going on here.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 02 - "A Tepid Downtrickle"I'm not really sure what this is. Equal parts pretension, patience, and placency are needed for maximum enjoyment. There's a very free meter to this so I hope you're ready for musique concrete.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website MUSIK - Aug 01 - "Saskatchewan"Cheezy electronica starts off MUSIK (August 2006) roight. A frenetic melody along with some lo-fi percussion gives away to a solo of sorts before repeating the main theme. It took a long time to make despite the fact that it sounds like approximately 59 billion other songs of its ilk. Canada would be proud.Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website
