Too Hot

It’s been way TOO DAMN HOT here in Connecticut as well as other parts of the country. This podcast, and a tall iced lemonade will help you to chill out in this heat. Dr. Lonnie Smith brings it on with a slow groove aptly named for tonight’s show. Joshua Redman picks it up with his [...]

The jazz shelves at WHUS just got restocked with some new stuff. I wanted to feature these CD’s on the show so we will hear new releases from artists like Gretchen Parlato, Karrin Allyson, Ben Williams, Noah Preminger, Sean Jones, and more. These are some great CD’s and I will feature more from these albums [...]

Unknown Cats

There are so many great talented jazz artists that don’t get the notoriety of Joshua Redman, Marsalis Family, Chick, and others. We try to feature these musicians on In The Groove as much as possible. This show is comprised entirely of these artists. We start out with some Rochester cats, Mike Melito and Paradigm Shift. [...]

Jazz night NYC

This show recaps our Friday night hitting the NYC jazz clubs. We saw Donald Harrison’s Treme show, Joel Holmes Trio and The John Fedchock NY Sextet (featuring Walt Weiskopf). It was a great night and doing this show lets me share some of that music with you. Please note that apparently I was looking at [...]

Father’s Day 2011

Its sort of a tradition on Father’s Day to begin the show with Horace Silver’s classic Song For My Father. Cannonball’s cool One For Daddy-O continues on that theme. Next up is a Curtis Brothers set to get us ready for their live gig that evening. Later in the show we have a set as [...]

Out To Lunch

Quite an eclectic show. It all starts off with some swinging Joshua Redman, early in his career (1995). It continues with some New Orleans sounds from Skerik and John Ellis. Then we begin our ascent into the avant garde with Greg Osby and then full out (out to lunch) with Eric Dolphy. We then come [...]

Gil Scott-Heron tribute

This week’s show begins with a tribute to Gil Scott-Heron, who sadly passed away yesterday. Gil was an innovator. His contribution to jazz came with the fusion of his music, spoken word and poetry. He is credited as having a major influence on the Hip-Hop genre. Perhaps the most famous of his writings The Revolution [...]

The Groove

This show is dedicated to The Groove. Does anyone signify The Groove better than Tower of Power and James Brown? I don’t think so. That is followed by a classic (but dated) sound of Jimmy McGriff. The rendition of All Blues here is one of the more soulful versions of the Miles Davis composition [...]

Jazz Roots and more

I wouldn’t say that this is a show about the roots of jazz, but I did play many selections from the Jazz Roots CD featured here. Funkify the Groove

In the Groove gets down and funky in this set. I’ve been in this state of mind for a few weeks now, and we continue with a funky set featuring some low horns and a big brass sound. We start with Joshua Redman’s Elastic band and then move into some heavy horns with Nomo, Bonerama [...]

Back from N’awlins y’all. We had a great time diggin’ the music scene down there. Before the final four

The show title has nothing to do with the music, but this broadcast preceded the UCONN Huskies basketball team drive to the NCAA championship. This is a listener inspired podcast. From a Facebook wall post, I was turned on to a Roy Haynes album, Out of the Afternoon, featuring an early Rahsaan Roland Kirk appearance. Modern Music

There were a lot of people hanging around WHUS this week while I was doing this show. One person was listening and was intrigued by the music. Modern Jazz trios

This podcast showcases modern jazz trios. This small ensemble format takes many forms. We then continue with some very thoughtful [...]

Jazzy Christmas 2010

Spiritual means different things to different people. I, for one, would not say I am a spiritual person in the conventional meaning of the word. Charlie Parker Tribute Revisited

No radio show this week, so I am republishing a podcast originally posted in August of 2008. This tribute was first aired on the anniversary of Bird’s 88th birthday, but its great to hear these tunes any time of the year. This great alto player is often considered the founder of Be-Bop music. Before Bird in the 1940's, Jazz was primarily big-band music, dance music that was perhaps the most popular genre of it's time. Bird featured a hard driving quartet and quintet format with an emphasi ...

Worldly Guitar

This weeks program features guitarists from around the world. We start tonight's show with some rockin' guitar work from Mike Stern's new album Big Neighborhood. A great title that highlights that through music and the Internet, the world has become one big neighborhood. The second track I play from this album features Richard Bona whose vocals give the tune an African vibe. We hear from Belgium's Django, who perhaps brought the guitar to jazz music in the first place. We also get to hear t ...

More from '09

We continue last weeks retrospective of 2009 releases. Even after 2 shows dedicated to last years music, I still have a stack of music that I did not have the time to get to. I guess you can say that it was a prolific year for new music. Despite reports that jazz is dead, it is indeed thriving with new music and new artists. Trios

This show features jazz trios in many different combinations. One usually thinks of piano, bass and drums as your traditional jazz trio, and indeed much of this show is with that format. Beyond that are piano-less trios led by sax, guitar, organ-guitar-drum trios, and other formats represented here. Of particular interest is the unique sound of Rudresh Mahanthappa's new trio Indo-Pak coalition with alto sax, guitar and tabla. It is a very interesting fusion of jazz and mid-eastern sounds th ...

Hot New Music

Lots of new jazz releases have hit the shelves at WHUS, and we will feature them here today. I especially like the Indian/Jazz Fusion on Fareed Haque's new album Flat Planet. Joyous Spring

This show begins with a celebration of Spring starting with one of my favorite standards that is sure to put you in a joyous mood, Joy Spring. We keep in the Spring theme and segue to our featured artist Jimmy Greene who performed Friday evening in New Haven's Firehouse12. Jimmy is becoming one of the premier tenor players on the scene today. We feature Jimmy Greene from 3 different albums including 2 from a soon to be released CD entitled Mission Statement. We also hear from Ralph Peterson ...

Post Radiothon

Radiothon is over and its back to just playing some great jazz music. Thanks to all that supported this program and WHUS. I will give more formal thanks on next weeks show. I had been away for this Saturday's broadcast and this is a show I did as a fill-in on March 11. I carefully edited out any mention of Radiothon as I have grown tired of pleaing for donations. No real theme here, though as I listen, most of this program features guitar and bass as leaders. Playlist Track * Artist * Albu ...

Radiothon 2009 Continued

This is the official WHUS Radiothon week. I really appreciate the great support shown by our podcast listeners last week. We received pledges from all over the world. However, the station has a long way to go to meet its fund raising goal, and showing your support lets WHUS know that you appreciate jazz programing and this podcast. We have a special gift for our supporters. It is a CD called Private Tracks that is a compilation of rare jazz tracks that is unavailable or difficult to obtain ...

Radiothon 2009 - Support Jazz Programing

This show is a reprise of one of my favorite shows from July 2008. It is also a plea to support WHUS, this podcast and Jazz radio programming. WHUS FM is the broadcast home of In The Groove, Jazz and Beyond. Without this great, listener supported radio station, this show and Podcast would not be possible. I am asking our listeners to please show your support for this station, this Podcast and Jazz programming by making a donation. This year I am offering as a gift for your donation a specia ...

New CD's

Usually, the playlists from my show are mostly programmed on my laptop before I go on-air. This night, I forgot my power-supply and my battery was spent, so I had to wing it. Fortunately, there are a lot of new releases that hit the jazz shelf at WHUS. Many of the tracks I had not previewed prior to airing, but was pleasantly surprised by these hot new tunes. For something completely different for In The Groove, dig the new Bad Plus CD with covers of Nirvana's Kirk Cobain, and the Bee Gees. ...

Mellow and Meditative

My playlists are often a reflection of my emotional state state of mind, and this is certainly one of those shows. This set is mellow and meditative, yet intense with emotion and heartfelt playing as should be the case when any great artist creates in his or her art-form. In this case, we hear some great jazz compositions and a few beautiful ballads. Of note is Branford Marsalis' cover of the Coltrane classic A Love Supreme and Pharoah Sanders' Body and Soul. The show concludes with the fin ...

Fusion Fill-in

My regular show this week was preempted for sports, so I have a posted a broadcast from a December fill-in I did for DJ Slammin' Sammy on WHUS FM. We start with a cookin funky track from Boston based Akashic Record. We continue on with a wide range of electric Jazz-Rock fusion that shows the breadth of this genre. Perhaps the most outrageous track is from Miles from India. From the website; A Cross-Cultural Celebration of the Music of Miles Davis by India's Foremost Musicians Collaborating ...
