Colorado Valley Sunset - Redux

I'm always trying to find new stuff that makes my offering to you more compelling. Here's a re-do of an earlier show using what has apparently become the darling of the photojournalists at the newspapers as they desperately try to catch up to the New Media. It's called SoundSlides, and it's not bad. As a matter of fact, I'm impressed, as is apparently, the print media.

Chapter One from Charles Chupp's "Frankly Speaking"

The roaring twenties were in session, even in rural De Leon, and the good times rolled until Black Friday, October 25th, 1929 — and the arrival of Charles Elvin a month later. He did not cause the Great Depression, nor did the Great Depression cause him. Times got tough but Hugh and Thel were blessed with yet another son, March 15th, 1933, as they moved from one rundown shelter to another, usually when rent was due. Benny Wayne was born December 18th, 1939, and Hugh and Thel ceased produc ...

Old Time Radio: Hopalong Cassidy and the "Phantom Panther"

Something about cowboys and the west caught my attention at a very early age. I suspect it was in my blood given that my great- great-grandfather, L.B. Harris, watched the Battle of San Jacinto from the bed of a wagon in 1836 at 14 years-old and went on to become a Texas Ranger and successful cattleman. I loved Hopalong Cassidy, the Lone Ranger, Sky King and the Cisco Kid on early TV. Later it was Bonanza, Wyatt Erp, High Noon and even later, The Shootist, starring one of my heroes, Joh ...

These Houstonians thought "green" way before it was hip

Urbanization in Houston continues at a dazzling pace – more people, more buildings, more traffic, more dwellings, and more of everything that any modern-day, hyper-dynamic city is bound to experience. However, there were some, several decades ago, who had a vision; a vision that would provide a very important respite - a human respite - from the frenetic pace that the city of Houston was destined to experience in its rise to become one of the world’s most important urban areas.

Texas History Tidbit: Sturdiness, wit and luck made Cabeza de Vaca a legend
