Fun Friday: Awa odori

This is a video of the Awa dance native to Tokushima prefecture. The celebrations got a little out of hand but were so much fun they decided to do it again every year with the dance moves reflecting the drunken stumbling festival goers. Fun Friday Would you like a cup of tea ?

This week's Fun Friday episode focuses on the phrase "èãããï" ( Cha shibaku ) which means "would you like to go out and have a cup of tea?". A varient on that is "èãããããï" (Cha shibakehen?). This phrase is used only in casual situations between good friends in Osaka. Perhaps you shouldn't use it with older people of those of a higher status. Enjoy using this Osaka street slang !

Rikaichan pop-up Kanji dictionary

I just found out about this new incredible tool for reading kanji on the web. It's called Rikaichan and gives you a pop-up hiragana reading and English translation of any kanji you roll your mouse pointer over. I think this will be of particular use for anyone who wants to escape text book Japanese and get into some really high level reading. It's fast, easy to use albeit a little fiddly to install. So I made this little instructional video on how to use it. I also hope this will be useful ...

Know your sushi !

You know you are in Japan when you can order Sushi from a touch panel screen that gives you an estimate of how many minutes your order will take to prepare. Beb and I experienced this technology the other day when we went out for Sushi in the Johtoh district in Osaka.  I had never seen this technology before and felt somewhat of a country bumpkin  as I tried to figure out how to use the ordering system. There is even a hole for you to dump your used plates which it counts and then ...

Fun Friday TENJIN MATSURI

Here's a video of the Tenjin Matsuri I went to last month. The Tenjin Matsuri is one of the "Big three" festivals in Japan attracting somewhere in the region of half a million visitors every year. It was packed and boiling and the police weren't quite in control of the situation. I think it was a little more work than fun but it was well worth the experience. Luckily there wasn't a stampeed and I survived to tell the tail with video evidence to boot. The Tenjin Matsuri is over a t ...
