Circuit Skills: LED Color Organ, sponsored by Jameco Electronics

Long before the dawn of digital music, folks employed the power of the electric color organ (aka "light organ") to add some synced visuals to their hi-fi experience. Schematics for building such a beast based on AC power and incandescent bulbs can be be found fairly easily on the web, but plans for comparable LED-based designs seem a bit harder to come by. Adapted from Aaron Cake's 3 Channel Spectrum Analyzer, I built my own analog LED Color Organ to enhance the aural experience. The c ...

Collin's Lab: Custom Fit Earbuds

I've used quite a variety of sound-isolating personal audio gear; around-ear cans, in-ear buds, as well as active noise-canceling models. All of these posed problems for me in one way or another. I was excited to find out that there are custom-fit headphone services out there, but my enthusiasm withered upon learning the price for such a thing. Thankfully, I did ...

[Note: Jameco is currently offering all the parts I used in this video as a perfboard prototyping kit -- just add wire & solder. ] When you think "DIY electronics," one of the first images that likely comes to mind is of parts and wire soldered to a standard piece of perforated circuit board -- and that makes sense. Perfboard is widely used because it's so versatile. Essentially, it's just a grid of potential solder-point connections. You can trim it down to just the size you need, or ...

Diana Eng reports from Hamvention 2010

On May 14-16, 2010, over 15,000 ham radio enthusiasts gathered for the annual Hamvention in Dayton, Ohio. From the moment I drove up behind the creator of APRS (GPS for ham radio) there was something radio-related to see. It was like ham radio's Maker Faire. I've captured some of the highlights in this video. There were demos of Arissat-1, a homemade satellite from AMSAT. Morse code keys of every kind were scattered throughout the convention space (touch sensitive and bugs). There were ...

Vintage radios at Hamvention 2010

I like to think of ham radio operators as some of the original makers and hackers. Collin's Lab: Kit-making

When recently faced with the dauntingly tedious task of assembling my first-ever batch of electronics kits, I was lucky enough to have the ever-helpful eye of seasoned kit-maker Becky Stern close by. While observing my one-man assembly 'process', Becky advised a more efficient, modular assembly line technique using intermediary storage vessels. Streamlining the process left me with plenty of time to cook up some unusually fancy title/motion graphics for the above-seen video. Of cour ...

Circuit Skills: Circuit Board Etching, sponsored by Jameco

I very much enjoy making my own circuit boards. It's a satisfying process that ties together my love of electronics with materials I used back in my art school days. It's also the most accurate way to build a circuit short of sending away to a PCB manufacturer, and it's much more fun. Subscribe to the MAKE Podcast in iTunes, download the m4v video directly, or watch it on YouTube. Collin's Lab Notes: DIY Cymatics

Sound can have some amazing effects on liquids - and some downright bizarre effects on non-newtonian fluids such as the conveniently simple mixture of cornstarch & water. Now, after bringing my own small puddle of goop to 'life', I feel pretty much satisfied =] Some additional pics from the session - Download the m4v file or subscribe in iTunes From th ...
