President's Day 2008 was a spectacularly beautiful day of sun and blue skies, considering the usually grey weather of February. I also unexpectedly had the day off from work. So after a visit to the neighborhood pool, the family and I drove up to Haleiwa for shave ice. The cool, green town of Waimea (a.k.a. Kamuela) is home to what could be Hawaii's best playground. Anuenue Playground, an incredible wooden wonderland, was built and is maintained by the entire community. It's a must-visit stop as we pass through on our way from Hilo to Kapa'au. One of the key stops on our regular pilgrimages to the Big Island is a drive out to Kapa'au, ancestral home of my mother's side of the family, to visit the graves of my maternal grandparents at the Kohala Jodo Mission.
