A mix of some great music spanning many styles of jazz. Highlights include Pat Metheny, Wynton Marsalis, and Thomas Chapin. Thomas Chapin was a great jazz artist born in Manchester Connecticut. We used to listen to him play at local clubs in the early 80's. He always played with passion and fire. His career was cut short at the prime of his life from leukemia. At the time Chapin was at the top of his creative genius. This podcast contains two tracks and a video below that show Chapin's arti ...

A Ghostly Podcast

We get into the Halloween spirit with this scary collection of jazz tunes. Voodoo, Black Magic, Zombies, Ghosts and more for this weeks selection of tunes. For an entire CD of music inspired by ghosts and goblins, I would recommend Greg Abate's Monsters of the Night. One of the tunes closes out this weeks podcast, but Greg brews up an entire CD of hard driving compositions inspired by the Halloween theme. Heard in Hartford

Jazz fans in the Hartford area are very fortunate to have access to great live music in such abundance. Lately we have our friend Andres Chapparo to thank for producing many of the concerts here. He has brought us the Pork Pie Hat Jazz series with shows every couple of weeks through the Fall and early Winter. Friday we saw the Avery Sharpe Trio, and in following weeks we will be presented with Ralph Peterson, Antonio Hart and more. Also of note are local jazz heroes Steve Davis and the Luqu ...

This podcast celebrates autumn's equinox (September 22) in jazz music. At the same time, we are honoring what would have been John Coltrane's 83rd birthday (September 23). Dave Holland Speaks to ITG

Prior to his performance at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival in Lennox, MA, I had the opportunity to interview jazz bassist Dave Holland. We spoke about the beginning of his career in jazz, working with Miles, his thoughts on jazz composition and bass playing. The interview, about 20 minutes long is embedded in this podcast along with some of Holland's great music created with a variety of ensembles. Summer Jazz Part 2

Labor day weekend marks the end of the summer and this podcast is second half of last weeks summer recap show. It was a great summer for catching live jazz music. Dig these tunes by Seamus Blake and the norwegian organ trio Solid led by guitarist Bjorn Solli. We saw these cats playing at Smalls Jazz Cafe in NYC. Jason Palmer is represented on two tracks in this playlist. A fine trumpet player and composer, he plays every weekend at Wally's Cafe and Jazz club in Boston. The first of these tr ...

Mellow and Meditative

My playlists are often a reflection of my emotional state state of mind, and this is certainly one of those shows. This set is mellow and meditative, yet intense with emotion and heartfelt playing as should be the case when any great artist creates in his or her art-form. In this case, we hear some great jazz compositions and a few beautiful ballads. Of note is Branford Marsalis' cover of the Coltrane classic A Love Supreme and Pharoah Sanders' Body and Soul. Summer Jazz

Summer is the season of jazz. There are great festivals all over the country, outdoor concerts, and warm summer nights at hip jazz clubs. Its a great time to hang in NYC and go club hopping till the early morning hours. This summer was particularly fine for seeing great live music. Of course, Newport was the highlight, but we saw some great music here at the Monday night Jazz series in the park, at Black Eyed Sally's and in NYC. Next weekend is the Tanglewood Jazz festival in the Berkshires ...

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers was one of the most influential bands in the evolution of jazz. Fusion Fill-in

My regular show this week was preempted for sports, so I have a posted a broadcast from a December fill-in I did for DJ Slammin' Sammy on WHUS FM. Short Show

Another eclectic mix with no real theme. This show is the remaining tracks of a broadcast from October 4 of this year. Since I only had 4 tracks, I added a bonus recording of the great Charles McPherson whom we saw this weekend performing at the Jazz Standard with Tom Harrell. I just tacked it on to the end of the radio broadcast so it is not announced, but this track shows McPherson's strong bebop style in the tradition of Charlie Parker. Playlist Track * Artist * Album Hotel * Garaj Mah ...

Summer Trane

As the first weekend of the unofficial summer season, we just gotta start the show off with Summertime. Jazz-Latin

Maybe I should be calling this show Latin-Jazz, but to me this is Jazz, performed by musicians surrounded by Latin culture and influences. I am not an expert in latin music by any means. In the 70's, Carlos Santana introduced the Latin sound to rock fans. Gato Barbieri was fusing jazz music with his Argentinan latin roots. More recently Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache band began playing jazz standards and originals with distinct latin arrangements. New artists like Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and ...

NYC Jaunt

Another trip to NYC, another great couple of days hitting the jazz clubs and hearing great new and established jazz artists. Our first night was spent at one of our favorite West Village venues, 55Bar to see bassist Janek Gwizdala with his septet, including the great Randy Brecker. The following night we went to the Jazz Standard to catch Jeff Tain Watts and Ebonix featuring the great young sax player Marcus Strickland. We'll hear from these fantastic musicians, and others that appeared at ...

Gritty Guitar, and more

We start tonight's show with some unique guitar tracks from some relatively new artists on the scene. We saw Kurt Rosenwinkel live last weekend, and it inspired this show. Following Kurt are some fine new guitarists on the scene such as Mikkel Ploug, and Alex Machacek. We round out the show with a couple of talented pianists from New England, Miro Sprague and Christopher Bakriges. Also take note of the final track in tonight's podcast. A couple of months ago, I met with the Matre' De at the ...

Live At 55

This show is inspired by last evenings performance by Bob Reynolds at 55Bar in NYC. We'll hear not only from Bob, but bassist Janek Gwizdala and Oli Rockberger from their own recordings. 55Bar is a great venue in New York city that hosts some of the finest new jazz cats on the scene. You can usually find the great guitarist Mike Stern there on Monday nights when he is not on the road. Winter Solstice Holiday Show

We feature a cool groove this week. Jazz on Fire

Featured on this show are modern jazz cats that are on fire. These great artists are building upon the legacy of jazz immortals (Trane, Miles, Coleman) and taken the art form in their own direction. I'd like to note that these great musicians have all recently played in the Hartford/New Haven area recently. Who would ever think that this fair city would become the hotbed of live jazz? Kenny Garret performed here at the Artists Collective last evening. The Artists Collective was founded in 1 ...

Sing in Autumn

We welcome in Autumn with a few tracks that were written for the fall season, and then transition to a great vocal set. It was great to have Karen Frisk in the studio to present her new CD, How Little We Know. Karen is a fixture on the jazz scene in the Hartford, CT area. She always surrounds herself with the best musicians from New England, as she has for this album. Josef and Max

A tribute to a couple of my Jazz heroes who sadly passed away recently. Joe Zawinul and Max Roach were both innovators and artists as well as giants to the jazz community. Max Roach set the standard for be-bop drumming as he forged new territory in jazz with Charlie Parker. His collaborations with greats like Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus pushed jazz music to new creative musical forms. This NPR Podcast chronicles the art of Max Roach. Joe Zawinul was one of the driving for ...

Land of the Pharoah

No one embodies the spirit of John Coltrane more than Pharoah Sanders. He projects an incredible amount of emotion the tenor soxophone, and has the ability to coax the most amazing sounds from his horn. I had the honor of attending a live performance of Pharoah Sanders at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston on Friday evening. The Pharoah was in fine form on tenor sax with his quartet. This show features some incredible women of modern jazz. You won't hear any sappy vocals, or R&B that claims to be smooth jazz. Just hard be-boppers that happen to be of the feminine sex. These are some great compositions and arrangements by women artists and ensembles lead by women. Featuring great new artists like Christene Jensen, Joan Stiles and some that have been around for awhile like Jessica Williams and Barbara Dennerlein.Playlists and more music are available at: In The Groove Web ...

Summer Vacation Shuffle

Just as important as packing your suitcase, is loading up your iPod with some fine Jazz tunes before heading out on vacation. Load em' up, and put it on shuffle. The tunes presented on tonights show, are the ones that I enjoyed while kickin' back on the beach, or cruising around Cape Cod MA last week. The tunes enhanced the joy of a relaxing week off of work and taking in the sun, reading a book and watching the waves roll in. Of course while at the Cape, we checked out some live music, The ...

Post-Modern Bop

A sub-genre of jazz as practiced by modern era jazz musicians rooted in the bebop tradition. It draws on many different influences (e.g. latin, classical, soul) that expands the music beyond the traditional be-bop form. This show features some great modern jazz artists. The show is partly inspired by Hartford area musicians, Steve Davis and Jimmy Greene who performed friday evening at the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz. Old, New and Indie

I received a bunch of interesting CD's from Independent jazz artists that I want to feature. We love to promote these great artists that never seem to get the recognition they deserve. Giving these folks airplay is what community and college radio, like WHUS, is all about. In addition, a couple of new releases from artists you know (Chick, Bela, Ponty, Zawinul). In Part 2, I play some great old bebop albums from the 60's from the likes of Hank Mobley, Red Garland and others. New, Old and In ...

For Our Fathers

On the eve of Fathers Day, we dedicate this set to our Dads. These are tunes inspired by fathers, or in some cases tunes that bring back recollections of musical experiences with my father. This is a wild mix of latin, hard-bop, R&B, fusion, and even 70's rock from Emerson Lake & Palmer. To Fathers everywhere, I hope you enjoy these tunes on Father's day...
