Portage Park District purchases 504 acres near Shalersville

The Portage Park District is buying 504 acres east of Streetsboro that will become the county's largest park. The parcel was once part of an international freight airport and will now become a conservatory for hiking and bird watching. Portage Park District Executive Director Christine Craycroft says that the district will focus on preservation of the land now, but hopes to open it to the public in the future. Changes to Ohio's execution methods may begin in December

The state may become the first in the nation to use a single drug to put an inmate to death, or may be the first ever to allow a lethal injection to be shot into a muscle rather than a vein. March of Dimes gives Ohio an 'F' for premature births

Ohio is one of 17 states getting a failing grade from a group that tracks premature births and newborn deaths. The March of Dimes analyzed data from 2007, and found more than 13% of Ohio babies were born too early - before 37 weeks - which earned Ohio an 'F'. Indians name Sandy Alomar Jr. 1st base coach

One of the most beloved members of the Indians teams of the 1990s is rejoining the team. Sandy Alomar has been hired as first-base coach. Alomar spent 11 seasons catching with the Indians. Ohio, Attorney General Cordray settle class action suit against Marsh and McLennan Companies

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray is announcing a $400 million settlement in a class action securities lawsuit against Marsh and McLennan Companies. Cordray says money recovered as a result of this settlement will be given back to two state pension funds that, along with the Ohio Bureau of Worker's Compensation, lost money as a result of investments with those companies. Storycorps hears from Akron veteran of World War II

The Italian immigrant parents of Fred Tomei couldn't read or write English so someone else had to translate their son's draft notice. He was the last of four boys to be called up for service in World War II. It wouldn't be long before the 19-year-old Fred was huddled in the bottom of a landing craft headed for Omaha Beach on D-Day as a member of the 29th Division, 115th Infantry. He told his story to a friend of the family, Amie Cajka. WKSU's Mark Urycki reports.

Summit County has settled a civil suit over the death of a prisoner for nearly $900,000, over the objections of Sheriff Drew Alexander. Mark McCullaugh died three years ago during a confrontation with deputies in the jail's mental health unit. He was beaten, tazed, and pepper sprayed. Cuyahoga County government transition getting underway

Cuyahoga County is now in the process of changing the form of government it has had in place since the mid-1800s. Voters overwhelmingly approved Issue 6 this week. It scraps the 3 commissioner form of government in favor of an elected county executive and 11 elected council members. Of the current set-up, the only remaining elected county official will be the prosecutor. The government transition will be final in January 2011. Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson re-elected by a large margin

Cleveland voters have overwhelmingly elected Mayor Frank Jackson to a second term. Jackson easily defeated his challenger, former city councilman Bill Patmon. Jackson ran on his record of keeping the city's budget balanced without layoffs while other big cities are struggling with finances. Cleveland police find more bodies at home of convicted rapist

Police now say they've found ten bodies in the Cleveland home of a convicted rapist. 50-year-old Anthony Sowell has so far been charged with aggravated murder, rape, felonious assault and kidnapping in the death of five of the women whose bodies were found in his home and yard since last weekend. Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath says that police and fire crews will keep searching the property to make sure that no other bodies are in the house. WKSU's Kevin Niedermier reports.

Summit County experiences a shortage of ballots

Voting went smoothly throughout the state except for a few glitches caused by late poll workers in Dayton and a shortage of ballots in Summit County. Ohio Supreme Court rulings could mean early release for thousands of prisoners

Tens of thousands of prisoners could be freed from prison or be released from court supervision because of rulings handed down by the Ohio Supreme Court earlier this year. Julie Walburn with the Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says the agency will need to review 14,000 cases because of the court actions. Lost Airlines

Another Northeast Ohio Marine has died in Afghanistan...the third in 2 months. Lance Corporal David Baker of Lake County was killed by a roadside bomb Tuesday in Helmand province. A new play at Kent State looks at conversion therapy for gays

A new play that opened this weekend at Kent State looks at the aftermath of electro-shock experiments used to treat homosexualty in a group of 14 young men at Brigham Young University. The play, called '14', was written by visiting director John Cameron, one of the subjects in the 1970's experiment. Cameron shares that writing '14' helped him recover from treatment for a condition that he says can't be 'cured'. WKSU's Jeff St. Clair reports.

The failed execution of death row inmate Rommell Broom last month continues to raise questions for officials with Ohio's Department of Corrections. The Ohio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has sent letters to officials in two Ohio cities to complain about how they are handling political signs in those communities. The Cleveland Museum of Art's Gauguin exhibition uses a set of prints in the museum's permanent collection to shed new light on the radical, rebellious, and tormented artist. Keeping Northeast Ohio landfill under control

The state has reached a settlement with Republic Services on how to manage a northeast Ohio landfill where an underground fire burned for years. Republic also will also pay 10-million dollars in civil penalties for the problems at Countywide Landfill Three-million of that money goes to a community benefit fund to recompense southern Stark and northern Tuscarawas county residents who had to endure years of noxious odors. And, it estimates that rural residents pay nearly 40-percent of their incomes on out-of "pocket medical expenses. For the second time in two years, Ohio legislators are working on a plan to crack down on payday loan stores. The House Financial Institutions Committee plans a hearing on it Wednesday. Kent State's enrollment tops 38,000...
