A Biblical Life Sermon delivered by Pastor Lori Eickmann.
We hold that the Bible (The Book of faith) is the norm for our faith and life. But what does that mean? Is it the rule book for life? Is it the guide for every situation and circumstance? Or, is it more? Today we look again to scripture as the revelation of God in our lives, as the first Language of Faith, and are challenged in our “fluency” to share this incredible life giving story!

What enslaves you? The Bible implies that we are all enslaved but challenges us to choose the only slavery that makes us free—Jesus himself. Today, as we come near the end of our emphasis on the Book of Faith we see anew the prefect freedom offered to us all in and through Jesus Christ. It is not so much a conundrum as it is an opportunity for life well beyond the slaveries that too often dominate our lives.

Martin Luther was clear in pointing out that we are both “Sinner” and “Saint” at the same time. Certainly, we have been known to vacillate sometimes doing better than others. But I wonder sometimes if it is in the tension of the two that we find the most helpful truth: WE NEED GOD! Today, as we remember those who have gone before us in faith over the past year it does us well to be reminded that our need for God is key to who we are and ... We all like the idea of “reform” to one degree or another—it’s “change” we can’t stand! Reformation Sunday is a profound reminder that we are the descendants of “reformers” whose “protest” of what the Church had become changed everything even unto today. On this Re-Formation Sunday we look again at the ultimate “reform” and change that comes only from God and challenges us to let God change us into God’s own image!

It has been said that this is the era of following. Everything wants us to follow from political causes and campaigns—to products; from controversial issues—to athletic teams; I could go on and on. Today, however, we are faced with the ultimate call: who will be our God and how will we pursue our relationship to the god / God? And lest we forget, following means something profound and important for our lives.

Ever look up what your name means? Did that influence your self image? Names are important aren’t they?!? For ancient peoples, just knowing a name carried an important power in your relationship to the person or thing whose name you know. For us, God telling us God’s name through Moses means something about our relationship to God AND God’s relationship to us. Today we explore the implications and truth revealed in THE name that is above a ... Over the years there has been a great deal of emphasis on Biblical Literacy. It is good to have a working knowledge of scripture. However, if the Bible is our “first language” of faith how “fluent” are we in that language—that is how well can we speak and share this “language of faith?” When the risen Jesus tells the disciples they are to be his witnesses he is directing them to share the faith based on who he is and what he did. In ... Listen | Listen in your iPhone | Download | View full cache | Visit Website The Beginning... And the End!Sermon delivered by Pastor Randy Pabst.
How do we who a Christian of the Lutheran Tradition understand the Bible? Today we focus on the Bible as the “norm of our faith.” It is something much more that just the facts about God. It is something much more that just the “rules for life.” It is even more than the story of God. It is the divinely inspired living WORD of God revealed, interpreted, and lived out through Jesus Christ. It not only reveals God—it reveals who we are.

Giving away to receive; taking a cross (instrument of death) to know life; loosing life to save it! This all goes against our basic nature but is exactly what Jesus invites us toward if we are to follow. The Bible is the story of giving away so that one can receive. God gives first—his only Son so that the world (we) might know just how much God does love us. He then asks us to give ourselves over to God through the same Jesus so that we too ca ... Who or what is God to you? Seems like a simple question. However, how we answer that question with our lives may be more important that what we say or even how we worship. Today, we introduce the fall emphasis for Bethel as we focus on the basics of our faith through the Book of Faith—the Bible. We know God first hand because of what is revealed in this book and the Kingdom that is God’s Kingdom for us all!

With this nation in the grip of the Great depression, President Roosevelt proclaimed, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself!” And it is revealing to know that fear too often feeds upon itself. We too live in a “fear-filled” time. So it becomes even more important for us to listen to the words of the Prophet Isaiah as he addressed people caught up in cycle of fear. His response, of course, was the response of God! Today we hear a ... Are you a spiritual warrior? Most of us would never describe ourselves this way, even though we are involved in spiritual battles on a daily basis. Paul give us some practical advise on how to gear up for battle. The armor of God is a great image that point to one invaluable conclusion—in this world we need God’s strength.

Do you have a good marriage? Do you want one? Paul gives some controversial advice to married people, advise we often want to ignore or water down. Wives—be subject to your husbands. Husbands—love your wives. In the end, what matters is commitment displayed in action. Today we are reminded that the sacred institution of marriage is just that—sacred.

How do we live great lives? According to Paul, it's simple—imitate God. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Paul fleshes this out with a simple yet incredibly difficult list: release anger, be honest, speak gracefully, recognize God’s work in the world, be kind, forgive and most important of all, live in love. It’s time we got to work!

Do you work well with others? Creating community can be an extremely difficult endeavor, especially in our “lone-ranger” society. Paul calls for unity in the “body of Christ” and then gives some advice for making that dream a reality—value the spiritual gifts of others.

What is the cornerstone of your life? Paul uses the analogy of a house to explain what the Christian life is all about. The foundation is the work of the men and women who have proclaimed the faith throughout the centuries (apostles and prophets) while the cornerstone on which the entire structure depends is Jesus himself. The household of God is not an exclusive club but an inclusive family.

What do you deserve? Many of us think that God’s blessings are something we can earn or achieve if only we work hard enough. The core of Lutheran Christianity is that everything we are and everything we have is a gift from God’s hand. Today we explore an idea that often drives us crazy—that life isn’t a game to win but a gift to share.

What is your destiny? In the introduction to his letter to the Ephesians, Paul contends that we are destined for adoption as God’s children through Jesus Christ. In addition, we have been gifted with an inheritance to live for the praise of Christ’s glory. Living a blessed life involves recognizing our status and purpose as God’s children, not the accumulation of wealth, comfort and security.

We all know that Jesus can heal—even bring the dead back to life. It’s not just something for others or even those from Jesus own time—it is also for us. The catch? We have to want to be healed! That may seem obvious, however, there are times when healing and the new life it will bring is more a challenge than we are willing to admit. Yet, we know when we are ready for Jesus healing touch—Jesus is ready to touch us…

Why did the disciples cross to the other side of the lake? O.K. it’s a stretch. But, it is an important question (no joke intended). Today we not only ask that question but are brought face to face with what they encountered—a terrible storm. And, of course, who calms the storm? This is much more than a story about Jesus calming the “storms” of life. This points us to Jesus in the midst of our journey no matter what we might face!

Gardeners know about seeds. However, as obvious as Jesus’ parables might be about scattering seeds and the wonder of the mustard seed, there is another point in all this. Jesus is reminding us that our sowing in life is grounded not in production but in faith. Today we are challenged and affirmed in a life of faith and trust in God that empowers us to truly sow the seeds of faith and allow the miracle of God’s love to “grow” well beyond ou ... Following Jesus is a journey that requires both courage and stamina. This Sunday, we celebrate that God has given us sacraments to power our steps. Holy Baptism is the on-ramp to the Christian life. On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit, through whom and in whom the people of God are empowered and re-created. Pentecost is sometimes called the church’s birthday, but might more appropriately be called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is what gives us the power to live for God everyday. Today we celebrate that the Spirit is still at work in each of us and in the entirety of creation.

One of the worst human flaws is our tendency to compare ourselves to others. Immediately after Peter is forgiven by Jesus pointed toward his future, he wants to know what the future holds for another disciple (the one who Jesus loved!) Jesus’ simple response cuts through our walls of pride, shame and resistance—“Follow Me!” Today we hear the inspirational story of how a group of teenagers have answered Jesus’ call.

Forgiveness is tough stuff. We all have a tendency to hold onto our pain and regret far longer than we should. Ever since Peter denied knowing Jesus on Good Friday, he lived with a guilt few of us can comprehend. Now Jesus takes Peter back to that night and replaces his guilt with a reason to live. Perhaps forgiveness is as much about the future as it is about the past.

GuidanceSermon delivered by Pastor Randy Pabst. Most people don’t particularly like being told what to do—that is, unless it’s what they already want to do. Today, Jesus tells the disciples what they must do to catch fish. Their own efforts have failed rather miserably. Maybe that’s why they were ready to listen. Maybe, for us, it is after we have failed (miserably?) that we are truly ready and able to listen to where Jesus wants us to go. In any case, the promise is that when we listen ...
