This Podcast we are taking a break from the soul scene to venture over to the dance jazz side of things. As far back as the early seventies DJs such as Chris Hill were playing jazz to the loyal followers, this kind of Jazz was more uptempo and more suited to the dancefloor. The early eighties saw key London DJs specialise in this kind of music, the likes of Paul Murphy and Dr Bob Jones were sourcing and playing rare uptempo jazz combined with jazz funk and rare groove, the scene was born, with club nights springing up all over London. Then came the big one, Jazz DJ guru, Gilles Peterson, who in 1986 after many years on the underground circuit, along with Patrick Forge took over Dingwalls in Camden every Sunday afternoon, this event was called Talkin Loud and was the ultimate in eclectic black music. The scene was vibrant, and attracted many from far and wide, it had its own fashion and dance styles. At the same time the Acid house scene was in full swing and for a giggle Gilles and fellow DJ Eddie Pillar called the music that they played Acid Jazz, and it stuck. New artists such as the Brand New Heavies, Galliano and Jamiroquai were springing up everywhere and so Gilles created his own record label called Talking Loud, along with Eddie Pillars Acid Jazz label a whole new jazz scene emerged. The success of the Talkin Loud events and the Acid Jazz scene was huge and in 1990 a radio licence was granted and Jazz FM was born, with Gilles at the helm of course. However, it wasn’t long before Gilles was fired after playing inappropriate music and making statements supporting peace during the Gulf War.
