Link to the Show / Show NotesIn 1886, Chicago had one of their very first "police riots". It became known as the Haymarket riot and seven people were executed even thoug the prosecution admitted that they couldn't prove that any of them had actually made or thrown the bomb which killed several of the police officers. Today's podcast is the first half ofInquisitions, a dramatization of the events surrounding the trial. Rather than being a straightforward telling of the story, it tells it from the point of view of the widow of one of the executed men, Luella Parsons. She's been swept up in the Palmer raids of the 1920's and is being interrogated by a young J. Edgar Hoover. Parallels are drawn with todays "Homeland Security" and "War on Terror". It's an imaginitive rendering with only a couple of rough spots. It's a little jarring to hear a couple of the male charactors with obviously female voices, but that's easily adapted to. There's also a scene on a train in which the "Super-Capitalists" are caricatured a little too braodly for my taste. Tomorrows podcast will be part 2 of Inquisitions.
