Nichts anderes als die pure ausgelassene Freude überfiel mich als ich die Musik von Hussalonia aka Jesse Mank zum ersten Mal hörte. Als ich dann noch mitbekommen habe, dass er die vier Lieder der EP von der auch das Lied “Meaning Isn’t Based On The Importance Of Being, But On The Relationships In Beetween” stammt, in die Public Domain gestellt hat, konnte ich mich wieder daran erinnern, dass alles gut wird.
Doch Moment – Public Domain? Ja genau, die Songs dieses Albums kann man kopieren, verteilen, sampeln, covern oder was einem sonst noch einfällt, ohne irgendein Copyright oder andere Beschränkungen beachten zu müssen.
FM: “He sag mal, warum hast Du diese EP in die Public Domain gegeben?”
Jesse: “Ich wollte damit auf die vielen Künstler und Plattenlabels reagieren, die wegen Verletzungen von Copyrights gerade völlig am Rad drehen. Es gibt gerade den Trend, dass man die Musik die man macht schützt. Dieser Trend geht davon aus, dass es schädlich ist, wenn Menschen mit Musik das tun, was sie wollen.”
“Ich wollte etwas völlig Entgegengesetztes tun um zu zeigen, dass ich diese Idee nicht gut finde. Musik gehört den Menschen. In dem Moment in dem ich jemand Anderen meine Musik hören lasse, ist es nicht mehr nur meine Musik. Ich habe etwas Unumkehrbares getan, ich habe das Lied nämlich in die Seele eines anderen Menschen gelassen. Und dieses Lied gehört jetzt auch ihm.”
FM: “Also darf ich die Lieder dieser EP auch im freemusicpodcast und im freemusicwiki verwenden?”
Jesse: “Du hast meinen Segen für Deinen Podcast zu nutzen was immer Du von meinem Material nutzen willst. Ich fühle mich sehr glücklich in diesem Internet-Zeitalter zu leben und zu arbeiten. Es ist heutzutage so einfach ein weltweites Publikum zu erreichen. Dein Podcast ist nur ein weiteres Beispiel dafür wie Technologie die Menschen zu einer guten und gemeinsamen Sache verbinden kann, z.B. zu guter (und freier) Musik.”
“Es ist traurig, dass Menschen skeptisch gegenüber kostenlosen Dingen sind. Es scheint, als würden sie denken, dass etwas nicht stimmt, wenn etwas kostenlos ist. Der Wert wird heutzutage nur mit Geld gemessen … je besser etwas ist, desto mehr Geld sollte es kosten. Indem ich meine Musik verschenke, protestiere ich gegen diese kapitalistischen Vorstellungen und hoffe dazu beitragen sie zu schwächen. Musik ist leben und Leben ist unbezahlbar.”
“Ein anderer Grund meine Musik kostenlos weiterzugeben ist der, dass die Herstellung und der Verkauf von CD’s ein verdammt verschwenderisches Geschäft ist. In dem Maßstab indem ich Musik schreibe und aufnehme ist es viel besser für die Umwelt, wenn ich meine Musik in einer immateriellen Form anbiete.”
FM: “Wer steckt denn alles noch hinter Hussalonia? Was machen die Musiker, womit verdienen sie ihr Geld?”
Jesse: “Wer ich bin, was ich tue und was Hussalonia ist? Das bleibt am Besten alles ein Geheimnis. So ist es für uns alle viel lustiger.”

Nothing but pure joy fell over me when I listened to the music of Hussalonia aka Jesse Mank for the first time. Moreover: when I found out that he released the four songs of the EP the song “Meaning Isn’t Based On The Importance Of Being, But On The Relationships In Beetween” is from right into the Public Domain I remembered that everything is gonna be okay.
But wait a moment – Public Domain? Exactly, the songs on this album may be copied, distributed, sampled, covered or what else might come to your mind, and all without any restrictions.
FM: “So why the heck did you put these songs into the public domain?”
Jesse: “It was a reactionary move. Many artists and record labels have been crazed about copyright infringement and music ownership in this internet age. There is a trend to “protect” your music, implying that letting people do what they want with it is harmful.”
“I wanted to do something completely contrary to show that I do not necessarily agree with this idea. Music belongs to the people. The moment I let someone else hear my music, it is no longer mine alone. I have done something irreversible; I have let the song into the soul of another person. It now belongs to them as well.”
FM: “So I may use the songs of this EP in the freemusicpodcast and in the freemusicwiki?”
Jesse: “You have my blessing to use whatever Hussalonia material you’d like for your podcast. I feel very lucky to be alive and working during this internet age, wherein it is so easy to reach a worldwide audience. Your podcast is only a further example of technology bringing people together for good and common cause: good (and free) music. I applaud you!”
“It is sad that people are skeptical of free things; They are apt to think there must be something wrong with it if its free. We now equate value with money…the better something is, the more money it should cost. By giving my music away for free, I wish to protest and possibly dispel this capitalistic notion. Music is life and life is priceless.”
“Of course, another part of my reason for giving away music for free is ecological. Making and selling CDs is a pretty wasteful business. At the rate that I write and record, it is much better for the environment if I offer my music in intangible form.”
“Finally, I am a music fan myself and I know what it’s like to want to buy every CD ever made. It can’t be done. I also know how thrilling it is to discover a new artist. I created Hussalonia as a gift to obsessive music-nerds like myself: a whole catalog of free music.”
FM: “Who are the people behind Hussalonia? What are the musicians doing, how do they earn their living?”
Jesse: “As for me, who I am, what I do, what is Hussalonia: It is all best left a mystery. It’s more fun for all of us that way.”
