The former CEO and founder of Tel-Save, which later became Talk America -- which as since been merged away -- was a pioneer in low-cost long-distance plans. Now he wants to do the same for Internet calling with something he calls the MagicJack, which plugs into a computer's USB port and can be used with any conventional phone. It's being rolled out today with the launch of the magicjack.com website and a giveaway of 1,500 MagicJacks at the Technology Entertainment Design conference in Monterey.
Like Vonage and Skype, MagicJack allows cheap calling from a computer, with a few twists: After purchasing the MagicJack for $29.95 to $39.95, there's an annual license fee of $19.95 for unlimited calls in the U.S., Canada and a growing part of Europe. That compares with Skype, which is free for calls (using a headphone) to Skype-equipped PCs; beyond that, Skype, owned by eBay, charges $29.95 a year for unlimited calls to any phone in the U.S. and Canada. Vonage, on the other hand, charges $24.99 a month for unlimited calling in the U.S. and some parts of Europe.
