Literary circles stood up and took notice whenMarjane Satrapireleased her comic book memoirPersepolisin 2003. In the book, Satrapi tells the story of her youth growing up in Iran, tackling complex issues of patriotism, family, and love. This highly acclaimed comic has now been adapted into a feature-length animated film, co-directed by the artist and Vincent Paronnaud. The film version ofPersepoliswon a Grand Jury prize at Cannes this year, as well as receiving honors from the Sao Paulo, Vancouver, and Cinemanila Film Festivals and the British Film Institute.
