Press Review | Sofamecca
It’s not the first time that traditional instruments have been jammed up against machine music but it is one of the few where it’s not juxtaposition but a seamless combining of the two elements. The vocals are as lush as are the electronic soundscapes – these provide the core of the music, the sun which the guitars etc. orbit around. ‘Omar Sharif’ has a comet of keyboards circling around trailing a tail of joy. ‘Insects’ has angular guitars taking off for galaxies afar, ‘Saturdays’ has arpeggio (probably) synthetic strings bristling like satellites, Hawaiian guitars and squelches of noise all melded together in a retro-futurist stew. Tinkling stars of keyboards and sheets of pedal steel form as Milky Way vortex on ‘Crimson Veil’. Saving the best for last, ‘Lost in a Day’ adds a welcome return to earth though the music tries constantly to break free of the songs atmosphere, the perfectly pitched vocal anchoring everything down.
