George Liston Seay interviews Ian Buruma, author of Inventing Japan: 1853-1964 (Modern Library, 2003). They discuss Japan's modernization from 1868 to the present, looking particularly at the Meiji Restoration and "Japan’s way of adapting Western technology for its own advancement." Seay and Buruma explore both the positive and negative results of Japan's modernization strategy and its contribution to both World War II and Japan’s current status as an economic world power.
