Out of the thousands of adverts we’ve seen over the years only a few stand out in our memory. Who could forget the Milkybar Kid? Or the girl enjoying a flake in an overflowing bath tub? If you’re looking for the best-loved advert of all time however you’d be hard pushed to top the Gold Blend campaign that scorched our television screens across the 80s and 90s. Before Anthony Stewart Head was snared by the likes of Buffy and Little Britain he had an episodic on-screen love affair with actress Sharon Maughan. Their sizzling romance was based on a love for good coffee and their chemistry was so captivating that the adverts were actually listed in TV guides so people knew when to tune in. At the height of their fame 30 million people -half the UK population - tuned in to watch the first kiss. A book about the untold story of their romance went straight to the number one in the top ten list of best sellers and to top it off they were so popular they knocked a Royal scandal off the front page of The Sun. To mark their 70th birthday Nescafe are bringing together 10 familiar faces from past TV adverts to create a glamorous and iconic birthday portrait for the front cover of its loyalty magazine: Coffee Table. The portrait will include the likes of Denise Van Outen, Ian Wright and Tom Conti as well as the famous Gold Blend couple. In this exclusive video actress Sharon Maughan speaks out about what it was like to be one of the most watched couples on television and what it was like to hook up with Anthony Stewart Head once more for the 70th birthday portrait.
