The Context
A study involving 2-million people in 72 countries around the world suggests that both men and women are less happy in their forties than at any other time in their lives.
It reveals a global pattern of miserable middle age - a pattern that seems to apply regardless of demographics. Researchers found that people everywhere follow a U-shaped curve of psychological well being. The happiness dip in our forties, they believe, is intrinsic to human nature and temporary. The average, fit 70-year-old, is likely to be as happy and mentally healthy as a 20-year-old.
