Join Daisy & Duke as they interview Dr. Jeff Klausner about recent developments in our understanding about Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). There has been some recent news on STDs in the US with highlights from the recent CDC STD Conference in Chicago. Some statistics highlighted included that 1 out of 4 teens will get an STD; syphilis increased for 7th year in a row; and the failure to dequately screen gay men for STDs like gonorrhea or chlamydia of the rectum or throat. Furthermore, about 1 in 5 adults are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes and abstinence-only education does not work and may actually harm kids who learnd it. STDs are more common than you know. In the U.S. alone, there are 15 million new cases each year. Talking to your sex partners, even virtually, helps take away the stigma associated with STDs. AND it's scientifically proven to reduce transmission. Using Klausner's inSPOT website you can send postcards anonymously or from your email address to notify everyone you've had sex with in the past six months. Historically, when you tell a sex partner(s) yourself, it's more likely s.he will "hear" the message and get tested. Dr. Klausner is joined by the following experts for a panel discussion: DR. SHEANA BULL Dr. Bull is a sociologist and Associate Professor at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center. Dr. Bull conducts research on the use of technology to promote healthy sexuality. We have learned through her work and that of others across the country that while the Internet has enormous potential for sexual health education, we lag behind commerical endeavors and the public in using this technology effectively. DR. SHARON MITCHELL Dr "M" is the founder of The Adult Industry Medical (AIM) Health Care Foundation. AIM is a non-profit corporation formed to care for the physical and emotional needs of sex workers and people who work in the adult entertainment industry through our HIV and STD testing and treatment. DR MARTY KLEIN Dr. Marty Klein is a Licensed Psychotherapist, Certified Sex Therapist, and Public Policy Analyst in Palo Alto. For 27 years he has worked to empower men, women, and couples to feel more sexually adequate and powerful. Marty trains physicians and psychologists in sexuality across the U.S. and Europe. His most recent TV appearance was on ABCĂ?¢??s 20/20, discussing the way Age of Consent laws are used to control and punish teen sexual behavior. John Santelli, MD, MPH is a Heilbrunn Professor and Chair of the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health at the School of Public Health at Columbia University and a Senior Fellow at the Guttmacher Institute. John is a pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist. Prior to moving to New York 3 years ago, he held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the Divisions of Reproductive Health, Adolescent and School Health, and STD/HIV Prevention. He has conducted research on HIV/STD risk behaviors, programs to prevent STD/HIV/unintended pregnancy among adolescents and women, school-based health centers, and research ethics. He has been a national leader in insuring that adolescents are appropriately included in health research. John has been enjoying his new found freedom at Columbia â?? to speak out about the serious medical and ethical problems with abstinence-only education. Dr. Santelli received his MD from the Buffalo School of Medicine in 1982 and his MPH degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1986. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Adolescent Health, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health and AIDS Education and Prevention.
