In the beginning… (v.1)
- Matter is not an extension of God’s being or nature, but rather the consequence of an act of His will
- The mediated nature of creation by God through the Son permits humanity to study the world rather than merely being in awe of it.

- ‘Word’ is Logos: Greek idea of rationality
- Hebrew idea: Logos as Wisdom (God)
…and the Word was with God… (v.1)
- The Word is distinct from God, and yet, at the same time, fully God

- Equating of the work of creation by the Word with God Himself suggests a joining together of science and theology
He was with God in the beginning… (v.2)
- The Son being with the Father in communion, and in a state of readiness to do His will
- Profound relationality of creation
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. (v.3)
- The Word is the agent of all creation without exception
- Science should help us spiritually, for it silences us before God in wonder and awe. It keeps us humble.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only [Son], who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (v.14)
- Aesthetics: beauty of creation
