Public Assembly you said? What the heck is that? Well, it seems like it's the new name of the art space previously known as Galapagos (you could also call it Taspkag if you want...) There's an interesting all NYC bill tonight over there: Higgins's debut album was our CD of the month some time ago - actually... QUITE some time ago, since the new one they just finished (their sophomore record) took 3 years in the making. The band offers a rather sofisticated beat and psych influenced indie pop that often reminds us of Lennon's most melodic moments with the Beatles.
Looker is an (almost all) girl band that chews on bubble gum melodies and 60s inspired guitar riffs. The Homosexuals fish for influences in the later decade, but with a right to do so: they formed in London in 1978!!! Their poliedric punk-pop in its best moment sounds as fresh and fun as some of our favorite post-punk British bands from the early 80s (Stranglers, early XTC, London Calling era Clash). Oh, they have some NYC based musicians in the line up now.
