The horrific murder of an African American teenager in 1955 that occurred after he supposedly whistled at a white woman remains one of the most shocking hate crimes in American history. The story of Emmett Till and his killers has been examined and re-examined over many years, recently by author Christopher Benson, who co-wrote a book telling Emmett's story with his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. Benson will be speaking tonight at a KCPW special event called Memory and the Media. He spoke with KCPW's Jeff Robinson about how journalists have influenced the way we think about hate crimes in America.Christopher Benson is the co-author of“Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime that Changed America.” He’ll be speaking tonight at 7 at the Salt Lake City Main Library for a KCPW special event called“Memory and the Media,” co-presented by the University of Utah Department of Communication. The event is free and open to the public, and will be carried live on KCPW, 88.3 and 105.3 FM, and streamed live here at KCPW.org.
