David Vine is Assistant Professor of Sociology and Antropology at the American University, Washington DC and he is the author of Island of Shame: The Secret History of the US Military Base on Diego Garcia, published by Princeton University Press 2009
It is the story of the Chagossians who are still trying to reclaim their right to go back to live on Diego Garcia, where the Americans have built a strong naval military base initially to counteract the Soviet presence in the Indian Ocean in the 70’s. Today the base is also of vital importance in the war against terror.
