The Power of Giving April 19, 2009
Rev. David Alexander
We start the 2009-2010 Pledge Campaign today. We do our campaign in the spring because it the time to plant seeds—to prepare for a new harvest.
We’re receiving value from our spiritual community. We are asked to participate at the level of consciousness that gets our attention. In the general church cultures, there is an idea that 20 % of the people give 80 % of the funds to maintain the church. That is not true about NTCSl. It is much more like 50% of the people providing 80% of the funds.
The funds pledged during the Pledge Campaign are used to budget for the next year—we budget at 90% of the Pledges for the next year.
So the question is asked: “Why do I give?” There are many reasons: health benefits and for our social health, to just mention two. We give to the church because the community and atmosphere supports us. Education, inspiration, and support happen when we, together, provide an environment of caring. Together, we create a financially viable community.
During the Spirit of Home Pledging Campaign, the question that we ask ourselves is: “What is mine to give, knowing that we are each a generative being, here to give and receive.”
