Israeli Punk, Liz Nord, Danny Ben-IsraelLiz Nord, the director ofJericho's Echo, a documentary about punk in Israel, joins us to discuss same. 2 songs each from Israeli hardcore bandsהפוסי של לוסי (Lucy's Pussy)andנקמת עוללים (Nikmat Olalim/Babies'Revenge). The music may be derivative, but these bands are punk as punk, back to the roots: Using punk as a vehicle for political and social messages, and as a way of standing apart from conformist social conventions. For the second half of the show we turn to the psychedelic music ofDannyBen-Israel, recorded between 1968 and 1970. 4 tracks, 2 in English, 2 in Hebrew. This music is both incredible and incredibly underground, and it's interesting to hear how a former צה"ל(IDF)-band-musician-turned-hippie melds late'60s music and ideology with the messianism of post-Six-Day-War Israel, and how you can hear it turn from a radical high to a bummer trip.Jericho's Echo screens in SF on Wednesday July 27th, and it Berkeley on Thursday August 4th. Seewww.sfjff.orgfor details.WARNING: There's a bunch of obscene language in this show, mostly in the first 2minutes. (There's also some later, depending on whether or not you think thatThe Hippies of Today are the Assholes of Tomorrowis an obscene song title.)
