Episode Notes: Steeltown Heros is a promotion started by a joint venture of PositivelyPittsburghLive and EntrepreneurialThursdays to honor Steeltown Heroes. And the winners are: Darlene Westfall, Grace Robinson, Carol Hurley, Kathleen Hower. Steeltown Heroes are everyday men and women in Pittsburgh who do extraordinary things.
This show was rescheduled from October 6 because of technical difficulties. Steeltown Heroes will hi-light six Steeltown Heroes. There are many others who are not able to attend the show. Also Steeltown Heroes will be featured Entrepreneurial Thursdays panel on October 22, 2009 at Little E's on Liberty Ave. in Downtown Pittsburgh. Darlene Westfall is a breast cancer survivor. She is a member of the Pink Steel Dragon Boat team. Dragon boating is a 22 person team, paddling in unison, to push a 40 foot canoe in competitive water racing. All of the "Pink Steel" team members share their dramatic common bond. They are not just winners because of their courage and dedication. They are all breast cancer survivors. In the late 1980s, Kathleen Hower and 2 friends decided to dedicate their efforts to improving healthcare around the world. They had seen firsthand the difficult hurdles in getting adequate care, including severe shortages of even the most basic medical supplies. In 1989 Global Links was founded with a missionto share the medical surplus of this country with people in need. Global Links improves healthcare worldwide by redirecting surplus medical materials to healthcare institutions in developing countries. 25+ donor hospitals throughout the Pittsburgh region generously donate surplus medical materials. Global Links provides local hospitals with an environmentally sound and humanitarian use for surplus. Grace Robinson's passion and commitment to helping young people excel and believing it was essential to give back to the community, led her to found the non-profit organization Tomorrow's Future Inc. in 1992. Tomorrow's Future Inc. is a mentoring, entrepreneurial and job-training program for teens. Under Grace's mentoring and guidance with a core of dedicated volunteers, over 350 students throughout Allegheny County have participated in the program. The mission of the Tomorrow's Future, is to equip young people with the basic communication, employment and social skills needed to compete in today's marketplace. Speakers interact with the students to motivate and inspire them to go beyond the boundaries of their neighborhood community. Carol Hurley and her agency partners with several organizations in the Pittsburgh area to hold an entrepreneurial experience for girls 12 to 18. Girls Going Places Conference is held annually in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and educates young women to the options for post graduation careers. Girls Going Places is an interactive way of reinforcing career awareness and entrepreneurism. Through exercises like the Hot Company Board Game and Product in a Box, 120 young girls will have an opportunity to experience business building and team building exercises that are incorporated into the entrepreneurial experience. Carol is also the owner of Hurley Associates, a Guardian Insurance Affiliate in Oakland. Christina Jumba is currently the Executive Director of the Diversity Business
Resource Center (DBRC), a business resource center that provides a single
point of contact for minority, women, and other disadvantaged business owners
who seek information and referrals to sustain and grow their businesses. Christina is a member of the CityCounty
Gaming Task Force and Chairs the
Vendor Subcommittee, Northside Community Development Fund Board of
Directors, National Association of Women Business Owners and Women Impacting Public Policy and Governor's Advisory
Committee on Minority and Women Business Opportunities and the
MBE/WBE/DBE Governmental Committee. Andre Weisbrod, who is President and CEO of STAAR Financial Advisors and founder of the STAAR Funds. On August 15, 2009 at 60 he joined swimmers who sswam from Alcatraz to San Francisco. Donors pledged $5,000.00 to charity for him to finish the race. EPISODE147 -
