GU is Glenn Underground, another of those big fellas out of Chicago. This is a mid nineties second wave release on Cajual, the label set up and run by Cajmere (AKA Green Velvet in non-Green haired maniac performance art mode) which featured the talents of many quality producers such as Boo Williams (who worked with Glenn on their Strictly Jaz Unit project), Johnny Fiasco, Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak. Pound for pound, seriously heavy stuff, although Johnny Fiasco’s on the slight side.
Glenn Underground’s stuff leans towards the cheesier end of the scale, which is fine by me, Capt fromage squeaker. I first heard this on “The many shades of Cajual”, a compilation which I ‘acquired’ from the Alboy and subtley assimilated into my collection, but I also picked up the original 12inch at Reckless Records on Berwick Street, home to a great back catalogue of US house. It’s a totally uninformative white label on which the previous owner has written some made up names for the tracks in felt tip pen. This one is referred to as ‘Deep Laugh’ – which is actually pretty sweet. It should be the GU essentials EP, Cajual 326. Nightmare to get hold of now. I am totally in love with all the melodies and how they sneak and swing around the infectious b-line. And it sho is fat.
Glenn’s still very much about and playing out – he was in London just the other week I’m told.
