Stalag Luft III
Stalag Luft III was a Luftwaffe (derived from the words "Luft"= air and "Waffe"=weapon,is a generic German term for an air force) run prisoner-of-war camp during World War II that housed captured air force servicemen. It was in Poland, 100 miles southeast of Berlin.
The site was selected because it would be difficult to escape by tunnelling. However, the camp is best known for two famous prisoner escapes that took place there by tunnelling, which were depicted in the films The Great Escape (1963)
Great Escape war hero dies
Alex Lees, a Second World War veteran whose heroism was immortalised in the classic film The Great Escape, has died, aged 97.
Mr Lees was a prisoner at the Nazi camp Stalag Luft III in March 1944 when scores of Allied servicemen tried to flee.
The pensioner, who spent his last years at a home for ex-service personnel in Erskine, Renfrewshire, was a gardener at the camp and helped prepare the tunnels used in the escape.
