Newson has had a dynamic impact on contemporary dance and theatre. He has choreographed for many companies and in 1986 he formed his own company "DV8 Physical Theatre."

Born in Australia, Lloyd Newson's first interest in dance started while he was studying psychology and social work at Melbourne University. This interest eventually led to a full scholarship at London Contemporary Dance School.
Newson’s work incorporates dance, text, theatre and film, thus is difficult to define. He is interested in conceiving original work rather than performing existing plays or reinterpreting classical ballets. More recently he has started exploring verbatim theatre, looking at the relationship between text and movement. Indeed his most recent work called "To Be Straight With You," is more text-based than any other work he has created to date.

In this week’s Inspired Minds Lloyd Newson speaks to Breandáin O’Shea about how he goes about selecting dancers for his company, the process he undertakes in creating new works and how often identifying what he is angry about is crucial in creating new works.
