Link to the Show / Show NotesWhat's the best way to treat burns? Burns are grouped into three categories, depending on severity, and their
treatments vary accordingly.
First-degree burns are the least serious and tend to hurt the least. They only affect the epidermis, or outermost layer of skin. The
skin may redden and swell but usually will not create a blister. This kind of burn can be treated at home. Immediately run cold water
over the burn to alleviate pain. Many people apply ice to the burn, which offers relief but can lead to frost-bite if improperly done.
Never apply butter to a burn; it only traps heat in damaged tissue, causing further problems. After the burn has cooled, apply lotion to
the area to further ease pain and prevent dry skin. Once the burn has been moisturized, a bandage can help prevent further
aggravation. Script Number: 30123 For archived Family Health programs visit fhradio.org.
