What qualifies as hypochondria? The term "hypochondria" was coined in antiquity, when people believed that many of the body's ailments were caused by the movement of the spleen, which is located in the upper abdomen, or hypochondrium. In modern terms, the meaning of the term has changed drastically. It now describes a mental disorder, characterized by excessive health-related anxiety.
