What causes athlete's foot? Athlete's foot is a very common foot infection that's caused by a fungus -- usually Trichophyton rubrum. It generally affects both feet but it can just be on one foot. Most people have occasional problems with athlete's foot, but some people have athlete's foot infections on a frequent basis.
