Born Anna Marie Wooldridge on August 6, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois Abbey Lincoln grew up in rural Michigan on a large farm in a large family. The family had a piano, and Abbey early on developed an interest in music, and will credit the early recordings of Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington with teaching her how to sing.

In her late teens or early 20’s, she moved to California which is where eventually she met a man named Bob Russell who would become her manager and renamed her, Abbey Lincoln.

In this clip from a conversation recorded in Los Angeles, California in the late 1970’s, she talks about meeting drummer Max Roach who she tells us played a major role in her artistic growth.
