There is a new edition of the Bad Sports podcast available here:

Bad Sports podcast (2006-11-27)

In this week's lengthy edition, Ethan Glading and I discuss:

* Rice's big win to close out the football season, taking the team to 7-5 and a bowl game.

* UH's upcoming CUSA championship game at Robertson

* Early college hoops action

* The semi-professional football team known as the Texans

* The Carlos Lee signing

* Strange goings on at the Greek poker house.

Also, we reference the BEST COMMENT EVER on John McClain's blog, posted below (since Chron.com's blogs don't feature linkable comments):

It always seems that the writers are really just slightly better educated fans, nothing more. John, you tell us what you would have done and then say that you arn't the coach and neither are we. You tell us how many games the team should win and which ones and when they don't you blame the coach, the defense, the running backs, the quarterback or whoever. Maybe the one you should blame is you. Not for not winning the game but for being wrong when the team doesn't live up to your expectations.

I made the statement early this year that the Texans were not a very good team and with all of their injuries and the changes to the offense and defense that they would probably win around 4 games. You said probably 7 games. Well, you were and are wrong. I see your picks in the paper against the spread every week and see that you are wrong over 50% of the time.

What you ought to do is to admit you overestimated the team ability (you can blame injuries if you wish) and the number of games they will win. The team is not as good as you think and every week you have to come up with some reason for their failures rather than admit your mistake in judgement of the teams abilities.

You can bring up your old desire for the team to have picked Vince Young and try and convince your readers that things would be different if they had. But you know that is a load of horse manure. The Texans would probably have lost even more games with Young at quarterback but at least you keep your University of Texas readers happy with saying it.

It is time for you to just fess up and admit that your judgement regarding this team has been flawed. And as for that old "bring in Sage Rosenfels" cry, if he is so good why didn't another team trade for him to be a starter for them. Yeah, you and your sportwriter compadres are "sports experts". You say who should win and who should lose. Who should play and who should be sitting on the bench. Who should be drafted and who should be traded.

But it is like your picks against the spread, you right less than half of the time.
