One of Japan's most distinguished saxophonists, Nobuya Sugawa studied at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. Sugawa makes about 100 recital and concert performances a year and he has recorded more than 20 CDs, including the highly acclaimed (Takashi Yoshimatsu) Saxophone Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic and MADE IN JAPAN, featuring Japanese contemporary works. He has worked with leading Japan orchestras, The Philharmonia, BBC Philharmonic, Eastman Wind Ensemble, Orchestra d'Harmonie de la Garde Republicaine and many more. Sugawa's recent tours include stints with jazz bassist Ron Carter and guitarist Martin Taylor. In 2004, he performed at Suntory Hall together with the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, bringing the audience to their feet. Join Yamaha Wind Instrument Product Manager Jeff Hawley for this backstage chat with one of the industry's most honored classical saxophonists.
