Berber Rising:
Before Arabs ever set foot in North Africa, the majority population was Berber. Berber musicians today provide a rich but often overlooked contribution to the musical landscapes in countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Niger, and Mali. This program spotlights some leading contemporary Berber artists, including Takfarinas and Tayfa, legends like Matoub Lounes, and others in the international Berber Diaspora such as Houssaine Kili. The Berber story is one of intrigue, controversy, and the politics of language. And the music is sublime!

Late Night Live - 2009-08-24 :
Canberra Babylon
This week Laura Tingle discusses Malcolm Turnbull's leadership, given the National's distancing itself from Coalition policy on an ETS. Hapless is the word that's being used to describe Malcolm Turnbull at the moment.
The Dark Sahara: America´s War on Terror in Africa
On the eve of the Iraq Invasion in 2003, 32 European tourists were kidnapped in Algeria. At the time, it was thought to be the work of Al Qaeda linked terrorists, but British anthropologist Jeremy Keenan says that the hostage crisis was fabricated by the US and Algerian governments as a ruse in the war on terror.
Sudanese archaeology
Did you know that Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt? It's amazing what you can find out about a country when archaeologists take up their shovels and begin their excavations; how buried cities and tombstones can reveal what once was, and how this new knowledge shapes our perceptions of a civilisation both past and present.
Derek Welsby's public lectures:
Thursday 27 August at the University of Sydney, Eastern Avenue Auditorium;
Monday 31 August at the Australian National University, Hellenic Club of Canberra;
Wednesday 2 September at Monash University at Lecture Theatre E7;
Friday 4 September at Adelaide University at the Hughes Lecture Theatre.

Rachid Taha :
Interview in French: Xavier Bichon
Born in Algeria, raised in France, Rachid Taha grew up listening to North African folk and European pop; and when he heard the Sex Pistols, he took all three traditions and created one furious sound. His politically minded songs transcend genre, with beats and powerful rock melodies using Arabic instrumentation. Rachid Taha is in Australia to present his new album, Bonjour.
