Sicherheitsberater James Jones sagte, man brauche eine von Grund auf reformierte Allianz, die schneller und beweglicher sein und auch präventiv zur Verhinderung von Konflikten eingreifen sollte. Die europäischen Verbündeten stehen dem skeptisch gegenüber. Die Staats- und Regierungschefs der NATO kommen anläßlich des 60-jährigen Bestehens des Bündnisses an diesem Freitag und Samstag zu einem Jubiläumsgipfel in Baden-Baden, Kehl und Straßburg zusammen. Bereits am Vorabend des Treffens kam es in Straßburg zu Zusammenstößen zwischen Demonstranten und der Polizei. Etwa 300 Personen wurden festgenommen.
PRAG: Einen Tag nach dem Weltwirtschaftsgipfel in London beraten die Finanzminister der Europäischen Union in Prag über die Folgen der Konferenz. Bundesfinanzminister Peer Steinbrück sprach bereits von einem Durchbruch für die Regulierung der Finanzmärkte. Mit Blick auf die Bekämpfung so genannter Steueroasen sagte er, es sei ein "riesiger Fortschritt", dass Steuerparadiese wie die britischen Kanalinseln Guernsey und Jersey sowie die Isle of Man, die Cayman Islands und Singapur erklärten, sie seien bereit, auf die international üblichen Standards einzugehen. Auch sei es vor einem Jahr noch nicht vorstellbar gewesen, dass man mit Luxemburg und Österreich über einen anderen Umgang mit Besteuerungsrichtlinien verhandeln könne. - Im Kampf gegen die globale Wirtschaftskrise hatten sich die wichtigsten Industrie- und Schwellenländer - G20 - am Donnerstag darauf verständigt, mit 1,1 Billionen Dollar den Welthandel und die ärmsten Länder der Erde zu stützen. Zudem verständigte sich der Gipfel darauf, die Finanzmärkte und so genannte Steueroasen stärker zu kontrollieren.
ISLAMABAD: Das schwer unter der Finanzkrise leidende Pakistan erhält von Deutschland bis Ende nächsten Jahres mehr als 80 Millionen Euro Entwicklungshilfe. Diese Summe nannte Entwicklungsministerin Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul bei einem Besuch in der Hauptstadt Islamabad. Bei einer internationalen Geberkonferenz Mitte April in Tokio will Deutschland weitere Hilfen bekannt geben. Im vergangenen Herbst konnte Pakistan nur durch einen Milliardenkredit des Internationalen Währungsfonds IWF vor dem Staatsbankrott gerettet werden.
WASHINGTON: Der erste Haushalt von US-Präsident Barack Obama hat eine wichtige parlamentarische Hürde genommen und geht nun in den Vermittlungsausschuss des Kongresses. Nach dem Repräsentantenhaus stimmte auch der Senat dem von der Regierung gewünschten Etat in Höhe von rund 3,5 Billionen Dollar zu. Das Konzept für 2010 sieht im Kampf gegen die Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise umfangreiche Ausgabensteigerungen vor. Der Haushalt wird deshalb voraussichtlich ein Defizit von 1,4 Billionen Dollar zur Folge haben. Die oppositionellen Republikaner kritisieren, der Nation würden damit zu hohe Schulden aufgebürdet. Obama spricht dagegen von einem wichtigen Schritt auf dem Weg zum Wiederaufbau der angeschlagenen Volkswirtschaft.
CHICAGO: Nach seiner Amtsenthebung wegen Korruption ist der ehemalige Gouverneur des US-Bundesstaates Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, offiziell angeklagt worden. Der 52-Jährige soll als Gouverneur unter anderem versucht haben, den durch die Wahl Barack Obamas zum US-Präsidenten freigewordenen Senatssitz meistbietend zu versteigern. Im Falle eines Schuldspruchs drohen Blagojevich bis zu 20 Jahre Haft. Er selbst beteuert seine Unschuld.
CANBERRA: Australien ist einen weiteren Schritt auf die Aborigines zugegangen und hat die Erklärung der Vereinten Nationen zu den Rechten der Ureinwohner angenommen. Die Deklaration bekräftigt das Recht der Ureinwohner weltweit, ihre eigene Kultur und ihre Traditionen aufrechtzuerhalten. 2007 hatte das damalige konservative Kabinett noch kritisiert, das UN-Dokument spalte die Gesellschaft und sei nicht umsetzbar. Der Premierminister der jetzigen australischen Mitte-Links-Regierung, Kevin Rudd, hatte sich im Februar vorigen Jahres in einer historischen Erklärung bei den Aborigines für die durch weiße Siedler zugefügten Leiden entschuldigt.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia hat einen neuen Regierungschef. Najib Razak legte in der Hauptstadt Kuala Lumpur seinen Amtseid ab. Der 55-Jährige ist damit Nachfolger von Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, der als Konsequenz aus der anhaltenden Kritik an seiner Amtsführung zurückgetreten war.
BERLIN: Autokäufer in Deutschland müssen sich von Juni an auf eine Kürzung der so genannten Abwrackprämie einstellen. Die Bundesregierung will den staatlichen Zuschuss von 2.500 Euro für verschrottete Alt-Fahrzeuge nur noch bis Ende Mai in unveränderter Höhe zahlen. Danach soll die begehrte Subvention nach übereinstimmenden Berichten zusammengestrichen werden. Im Gespräch ist ein Betrag zwischen 1.000 und 2.000 Euro pro Auto, wie aus Berlin inoffiziell verlautete. Der deutsche Pkw-Markt boomt seit der Prämie, die noch bis zum Jahresende gezahlt werden soll.

Guy P. Harrison is a graduate of the University of South Florida with degrees in history and anthropology. he currently lives in the Cayman Islands, where he is a columnist and travel writer for a national newspaper. He has won several international awards for his writing and photography.
In this conversation with D.J. Grothe, Guy P. Harrison talks about his new book 50 Reasons People Give For Believing In A God, and details such reasons for god-belief as the obviousness of God, "playing it safe," the fear of hell, that belief in gods brings genuine happiness and comforts, and the fact that so many people are religious. He explores similarities between the reasons people give for their belief in Western gods and Eastern gods, and also similarities between the reasons people give for belief in gods and in the paranormal. He calls for a wider understanding of religion in general as an important first step in inculcating skepticism about religion. He argues that the reasons people proffer are often very different than the reasons theologians argue that people should believe. And he offers advice for what he thinks is the best approach for engaging believers on these matters of belief.
