Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a machine that could automatically translate everything for us? Well, that’s the aim of machine translation. Programmers and linguists have been trying to make automatic translations a reality for more than 50 years. To find out more about the subject, we spoke to John Hutchins, a retired librarian from the University of East Anglia.

Environmental history: definitions, methods and challenges
Updated
: 2009-06-09 19:27:00

Environmental history is still a young field and in some respects quite undefined. Many practitioners as well as outsiders struggle to define its boundaries. The challenge that historians are now facing is how to cope with an ever expanding field and how to integrate not only data from other humanities but also the sciences. In this edition of the podcast Paul Warde, Reader in modern history at the University of East Anglia, agues that not defining the boundaries of the field or a common methodology is key to the success of environmental history but also its weakness. It brings excitement and new ideas to history but in the end, if environmental history stays too diverse; it is not clear where it is going. How to deal with this problem is one of the key issues discussed in this edition of the podcast.

TDP SPECIAL: THE Eleventh Doctor Announced
Updated
: 2009-01-03 19:24:00

The BBC today announced that Matt Smith has been cast in the role of the Doctor in the iconic BBC series Doctor Who. Smith will be the eleventh Time Lord and will take over from David Tennant who leaves the show at the end of 2009. He will be seen inthe forthcoming fifth series that will be broadcast in 2010. The fifth series will also have a new lead writer and Executive Producer in the form of the BAFTA award winning writer Steven Moffat who is taking over from Russell T Davies. Moffat will be joined by Piers Wenger who will be the new Executive Producer for BBC Wales making the show. Following David Tennant's decision to step down at the end of 2009, the team behind the new series set about casting the new Doctor so that new adventures could be created and scripts written with Matt in mind. The identity of the new Doctor was revealed on a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential that was broadcast on BBC One on January 3rd at 17.35hrs. In it Smith revealed his initial reaction at taking on such a legendary role and his thoughts on what direction the Doctor might now be going with him playing the part. Matt Smith said of his new role "I'm just so excited about the journey that is in front of me. It's a wonderful privilege and challenge that I hope I will thrive on. I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling. "David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him. The challenge for me is to do justice to the show's illustrious past, my predecessors and most importantly to those who watch it. I really cannot wait." Lead writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat said "The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man. 2010 is a long time away but rest assured the Eleventh Doctor is coming - and the universe has never been so safe." Piers Wenger, Head Of Drama, BBC Wales added "With two hearts, a ferocious mind and over 900 years of experience behind him, it's not every 26 year old actor who can take on a role like the Doctor but within moments of meeting Matt he showed the skill and imagination needed to create a Doctor all of his own. It's just the beginning of the journey for Matt but with Steven Moffat's scripts and the expertise of the production team in Cardiff behind him, there is no one more perfect than him to be taking the TARDIS to exciting new futures when the series returns in 2010." Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama added "I am delighted to see Matt take on this iconic role. It will see him continuing his relationship with the BBC following his performances in Ruby In The Smoke and Party Animals, and his upcoming role in Moses Jones. The combination of Matt, Steven and Piers will, I know, take Doctor Who onto new and even dizzier heights." Jay Hunt, Controller. BBC ONE said "Matt Smith will be a mesmerising eleventh Time Lord, true to the spirit of the show. He is a worthy successor to David Tennant who has been utterly remarkable in the role and promises to continue to be in next year's four special episodes."  Matt Smith Matt Smith, 26, grew up with his family including one sister in Northampton. He was head boy at Northampton School For Boys where he excelled at sports, music and drama. Initially, Matt wanted to be a professional footballer and played for Northampton Town Under 11 and 12s, Nottingham Forest Under 12,13,14s and Leicester City Under 15 and 16s before a back injury forced him out of the game. Following his injury, and with the encouragement of one of his teachers, Jerry Hardingham, Matt decided to join the National Youth Theatre. It was during this time that Matt first gained attention at the Royal Court Theatre when he was cast in the play Fresh Kills, directed by Wilson Milam, whilst still at the University Of East Anglia where he was studying Drama and Creative Writing. Already a stalwart of the National Youth Theatre, his performance at the Court led to a variety of theatrical experiences at the National Theatre: in the award winning History Boys (directed by Nick Hytner), On The Shore Of The Wide World (directed by Sarah Frankcom) and also in the acclaimed trio of plays Burn / Citizenship / Chatroom (directed by Anna Mackmin). These roles led to Matt's first outings on the small screen, alongside Billie Piper in Phillip Pullman's period detective stories, The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North, where he played Jim, right hand man to Billie's detective heroine Sally Lockhart. These pieces were followed by the lead role of Danny in the BBC Two series Party Animals, the brilliantly observed drama set in the world of young politicians. In a dazzling return to the Royal Court in 2007, Matt played Henry in Polly Stenham's award winning first play That Face, opposite Lindsay Duncan. His performance gained Matt an Evening Standard Best Newcomer nomination and a year later the play had a second life in the West End at the Duke of York's Theatre. In between the two runs, Matt played Guy opposite Christian Slater's Buddy in Swimming With Sharks, Mike Leslie's searing West End adaptation of the 1994 Hollywood film. In this time he also played a lead role in the BAFTA winning BBC One series, The Street, opposite Gina McKee and Lorraine Ashbourne. Matt has recently completed work on Moses Jones for BBC Two, directed by Michael Offer, in which he plays the lead role of Dan Twentyman, alongside Shaun Parkes in the title role.

Mystic Babylon Open Mic Poetry Podcast TV no. 55: Cable Access 29 -San Francisco
Updated
: 2008-05-03 02:54:34

This show was posted a few days before it was posted on Cable Access 29/76 TV in San Francisco. I posted it earlier as a reminder to go to http://accessf.org/guide/schedule so you can go there and find out when you can watch it on the big screen. It is only available there locally in San Francisco. Below are the show notes. Hello. This is my regular Open Mic Poetry TV Special first broadcasted from San Francisco Cable Access TV, and later to be podcasted from my Mystic Babylon Poetry Podcast at http://mysticbabylon.podomatic.com , which will hopefully, also be distributed in other places. Today we have an English poetess named Jane Ormerod who will read for 20 minutes. I met Jane when she was touring here in placeCitySan Francisco. It was through subsequent contacts that we decided to work together to produce a video. Jane was born on the South Coast of England and moved to New York City in 2004. She originally started as an artist and then after obtaining an MA in writing from the University of East Anglia she became proficient as a writer. She has been published in a long list of print and online anthologies. Some of them are “Brownstone Poets 2007 Anthology”, and an Anthology from Uphook Press called, “A Cautionary Tale: Seven New York Performing Poets”. You can find more about a readily available spoken word CD of hers called, “Nashville Invades Manhattan”, by going to her web site at: http://www.janeormerod.com . An anthology of Jane’s is due to be published by a small press called Modern Metrics at: http://modern-metrics.com . At the end of this show after Jane reads I will read a few poems from my poetry book, “Spirits of Bondage Inherent Transcendence”. The Background images and music was either from the Podsafe music network, or used as art under a permitted creative commons license. The web addresses of this music and art will be listed in the credits.

Mike Hulme - The Science and Politics of Climate Change
Updated
: 2007-12-03 21:06:09

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2007/10/28/Science_and_Politics_of_Climate_Change Climatologist Mike Hulme examines frequent misconceptions about the science and politics of global climate change. ----- "The Science and Politics of Climate Change" at the 2007 Battle of Ideas conference hosted by the Institute of Ideas. Panelists include Mike Hulme, Chris Rapley, Hans von Storch and Joe Kaplinsky. The panel is moderated by Tony Gillard. The issue of the negative effects of climate change is rarely out of the media and is increasingly portrayed in alarming terms. Politicians of all persuasions attest to the seriousness of the situation and are competing to present their green credentials, alongside business, local government and pretty much every major public organisation. But what does science tell us about how we should respond to climate change? Are scientists becoming involved in campaigning for particular political responses, and, if so, is this a good or bad thing? Is the time for debate really over, or are political choices being obscured by talk of scientific consensus? Are the threats so great and the science so certain that there really is only one course of action? - Institute of Ideas Professor Mike Hulme is the Founding Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, UK, and is based in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA) where he has worked for the last 18 years. His general research interest is global climate change ? the science/policy interface ?but specialising in the construction and application of climate change scenarios for impact, adaptation and integrated assessment. Professor Hulme has prepared climate scenarios and reports for the UK Government (including the UKCIP98 and UKCIP02 scenarios), the European Commission, UNEP, UNDP, WWF-International and the IPCC. He was a co-ordinating lead author for the chapter on ?Climate scenario development? for the Third Assessment Report of the United Nations IPCC, as well as a contributing author for several other chapters. He is leading the EU Integrated Project ADAM (Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies) during the period 2006-9, which comprises a 26-member European research consortium contributing research to the development of EU climate policy.

Over 15,000 Attend the Sixth Annual Glenn Miller Festival at the Historic Twinwood RAF Airfield in East Anglia
Updated
: 2007-10-09 16:13:00

For anyone who loves the uniquely magnificent music of Major Alton G. Miller's American Band of the Allied Expeditionary Force, this Festival is a definite "don't miss". It features an outstanding swing band lead by a real blood member of the Miller family, and is presented in the very same venue that was used almost daily by Glenn's band after they arrived in England at the end of June 1944. The buildings you see, the trees, the roads, and the green pastures are the very same ones they saw and used during those grim days of World War Two.But the Festival is even more than this. It offers three full days (four in 2008) of spectacular performances by over 21 other groups and artists representing the style of music we label swing, jazz and jive. I personally cannot remember having quite as good a time at any other music gathering in the 67 years I have spent on this planet. Then, throw in hundreds of "re-enactors" dressed in the military uniforms or civilian clothing styles of the time, 1940's automobiles and military equipment, as well as extremely low level daily surprise flyovers by an RAF Battle of Britain Spitfire, and you can feel the clock turning back to the Greatest Generation's world. The Festival itself is well worth the expense of traveling to the United Kingdom, and I'd agree to do it again in a New York minute. This year's Festival was held during England's annual Bank Holiday weekend, and commemorates Glenn's AEF orchestra's 27 August 1944 performance at Twinwood, their only concert presented at a Royal Air Force base. Dates this year were Saturday 25 thru Monday 27 August 2007. The weather was perfect.....bright, warm and sunny days, followed by balmy evenings with a full "bombers" moon. The RAF airfield of Twinwood was just outside of the villages of Clapham and Milton Ernest, near the town of Bedford. Miller's AEF orchestra was stationed in Bedford to get away from the V-1 buzzbombs that were targeting London big time. With London only 50 miles to the south, the BBC had installed broadcast land lines from Bedford that went into their master control at Broadcast House in the capital city. Virtually all of the various radio programs the AEF band originated from studios in Bedford.Twinwoods was a convenient airfield for USAAF planes to use to transport Miller and his men to the hundreds of morale boosting concerts they made at 8th Air Force bases throughout Britain. In fact, it was the Twinwood control tower from which Glenn boarded that ill-fated Norseman for the planned flight to Paris on 15 December 1944, never to be seen again. The fully restored control tower now houses a museum featuring many photographs of the Miller military band, plus uniforms and personal items he left behind on that day. The door he walked out of is never opened now, and many report a "chill feeling" in the hallway that leads to that door. The official host of the Glenn Miller Festival is Glenn's nephew, John Miller. He leads his own 17-piece swing band that once was Herb Miller's (Glenn's brother and John's father) orchestra. John is a very entertaining emcee, as well as a very good leader and vocalist. He is also approachable and personable and made this Yankee from Indianapolis feel very much at home. His band displays the same crisp precision I remember from Ray McKinley's New Glenn Miller Orchestra of the 1950's and 60's. Their first set features his uncle's hits from the 40's and is presented with everyone in USAAF authentic uniforms. John bears a remarkable resemblance to his uncle, proving apples don't fall far from the tree. The second set is done in traditional dinner jackets and features music associated with other swing bands of that era and later. He has a gal singer by the name of Fiona Paige who is as much pleasure to listen to as she is a treat to watch perform. John's band has a website and has CD's available if you wish to check them out.John's concert was held on Sunday night on the main stage of the Twinwood Arena. The stage is built in the front of a large Nissen type hangar, situated in a natural hollow big enough to handle over 8,000 spectators, and it was packed this night. It was a special evening. For the first time in 65 years, an Eberle appeared and sang with a real Miller-led orchestra. Charming Jan Eberle, the eye and ear pleasing daughter of Glenn's civilian band lead vocalist Ray Eberle, spun a web of enchantment. She sang several selections from her new CD "Blue Champaign". She's a very pretty, sweet and charming young woman, and won the heart of this writer when we met the following day. She also has her own website, and has recently written a very interesting book about her dad. All in all, this was a night full of many memories which you did not want to see end.Over the three days of the Festival, there were many other performances and items of interest. I'll attempt to tell you about them a bit in the near future.Sandy Lyman Hintzhopeanndad2000@yahoo.comIndianapolis, Indiana USAOctober 2007Major Glenn Miller and Ilse - German Propaganda Broadcast - BBC - November 1944
