Pope Benedict in English - Weekly General Audience
Updated
: 2009-11-04 10:45:52

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today we continue our comparison of the monastic and scholastic approaches to theology which we began last week, by looking again at Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, this time in comparison with Abelard. Both of them considered theology as “faith seeking understanding”; but whereas Bernard placed the accent on “faith”, Abelard emphasized “understanding”. Bernard, for whom the aim of theology was to have a living experience of God, cautioned against intellectual pride which makes us think we can grasp fully the mysteries of faith. Abelard, who strove to apply the insights of philosophy to theology, saw in other religions the seeds of an openness to Christ. The respective approaches of Bernard and Abelard—one a “theology of the heart” and the other a “theology of reason”—were not without tension. They therefore illustrate the importance of healthy theological discussion and humble obedience to ecclesial authority. Theology must respect the principles it receives from revelation as it uses philosophy to interpret them. Whenever a theological dispute arises, everyone, and in a particular way the Magisterium, has a responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the faith. As we strive to deepen our understanding of the Gospel, may God strengthen us to extol its truth in charity. * * * I am pleased to welcome the English-speaking pilgrims present at today’s Audience. I particularly greet priests from the dioceses of England and Wales celebrating Jubilees, pilgrims from the Diocese of Wichita, students and teachers from Catholic schools in Denmark, and Catholic nurses from the United States. God’s blessings upon you all! 00:02:08:93

Who could forget the sad case of 11 month-old baby Henry Salter? He was orphaned when his parents Andrew and Anita were killed in a car crash last week in country New South Wales. The family was returning home to Condobolin from the Dubbo Base Hospital 200 kilometres away where Henry had been treated for breathing difficulties. Henry survived the crash with a few bumps and bruises. Police believe fatigue was a factor in the accident, relatives say the Salters were forced to make the long drive because of funding cuts at their local base hospital. Country doctors say the tragedy highlights the underinvestement in rural health. The problem will be the focus of a national conference of rural doctors from across Australia, taking place today.

School music in Boneo Radio National´s Bush Telegraph recently broadcast from the Boneo Primary School on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. They visited because the school is one of many around the nation who were preparing to join in a wonderful event called "Count Us In". It´s a campaign that celebrates music education in schools. Bush Tele´s Michael McKenzie spoke to Boneo Primary Music Teacher Sally Walsh and asked her how many times she had been involved in "Count Us In"? Australian school teacher qualifications Recently the AM program reported that, according to a survey by the Australian Education Union, students across the country are increasingly being taught by teachers who are not working in their area of expertise. The Union found that in 60% of secondary schools, teachers were working in fields they weren´t fully qualified in. The shortage was most acute in mathematics and technology. School Disability Funding Macquarie University's Dr Linda Graham says that schools in New South Wales are pressuring parents to get their children diagnosed with behavioural disorders to secure additional disability services funding. The Australian Curriculum Assessment & Reporting Authority Professor Barry McGaw is chair of the Australian Curriculum Assessment & Reporting Authority. He spoke recently at a seminar hosted by Learning Difficulties Australia. The reporting website Professor McGaw spoke about seems to be on track, it´s expected that school profiles will be published online before the start of the next school year. Of course many people opposed to 'league tables' will have something to say about that in the meantime

The rehabilitation of people who have experienced the trauma of war is a complex area. Counselling may work with some groups, but for others the concept of sharing personal and often traumatic experiences with a stranger can initially be daunting and confronting. One organisation in New South Wales that helps survivors of torture and trauma, is taking a different approach. Peggy Giakoumelos has more. *STARTTS is holding a fundraiser for the project on November 4. Contact STARTTS for details.
